How to Make a Snowman with Crafts

Winter Crafts

During the winter season, children and adults can spend the time warm and indoors working on a few winter crafts. Learning how to make a snowman with crafts may take a little time, but it can be pretty fun. You can make the snowmen to use as decorations, props, or even toys for children. This is a craft that can be done at home, in school, or in a daycare center.

Even though there are directions to follow for making your own little snowman, you can still have control over this craft. You can decide on the color of his arms and apparel. Go with the traditional brown branch arms and the black top hat, or maybe give him white arms and a blue hat! Make one snowman, make him a friend, or make an entire snow-family! This is your craft and the choice is yours!

Here are the materials, directions, and a few tips on how to make a snowman with crafts. Some of these steps do include a few different tips, so it may be best to read through all of the directions before beginning the craft. If there are any children working on this craft, then the help and supervision of a trusted adult is recommended.

Materials:

White Cotton Balls (craft or regular cotton balls).
Colorful Pipe Cleaners.
Colorful Construction Paper.
Colorful Craft Felt.
Glue.
Scissors.
Pencil.
Googly Eyes.
Washable Markers (optional).

Directions:

1. Take two or three white cotton balls and glue them together one on top of another. If the cotton balls are different sizes, then keep the larger one on the bottom and the smaller one on the top. This will help it to stand up better. Allow the glue time to completely dry before continuing to work on the craft. If you start to work on it before it dries, it may fall apart.

2. As the glue dries, you can cut out the other pieces needed for your snowman.

Cut out the branch arms from pipe cleaners. You can use any color, but brown would be a good one. Make sure they are long enough to be glued on, but not too long. You do not want the arms to be heavier than the snowman. The snowman may end up falling over.

Cut out the top hat and buttons from the construction paper. If you are using light colored construction paper, then it may be helpful to draw the objects before cutting them out. Make sure the buttons are big enough to hold a little glue.

This is optional, but you can also use craft felt to cut out the scissors. How long your scarf is depends on your preference and how big your snowman is.

3. Once the glue is dry, you can work on the face. There are a few ways to give your snowman a face:

One way would be to draw and cut out the pieces from construction paper.

Another way would be to glue on googly eyes. The rest of the face can come from construction paper or you can draw it on.

The final, and possibly the easiest, way would be to carefully draw the face on with a black marker.

If you use any glue on the face, give it some time to completely dry.

4. When you are done with the face, you can work on the body. Here are a few tips for decorating your snowman’s body.

For the buttons, you can glue on pieces of construction paper or draw them on. Two or three buttons should be enough, but this is up to you.

To attach your scarf, you can carefully wrap it around the neck (the top of the middle or second cotton ball, depending on how many you used) of your snowman. Use a little to glue to hold it in place. Take your time and be very careful with this, as you do not want to wrap it too tightly and end up taking the head off of your snowman (do not worry if this does happen, you can always re-glue it and try again).

Allow all of the glue used time to dry completely.

5. Once everything is dry, you can glue the pipe cleaner arms on each side of your snowman. You should glue it on the middle or second cotton ball.

Fold the end of each arm a little and then glue the folded end on. If the glue does not hold, then you can place a small piece of tape over the folded end and tape it to the snowman. Folding it will provide the arms with a little space to hold the glue or tape easier. If the glue does hold, then give it a little time to completely dry.

6. Now here comes the final step, gluing the hat onto the snowman. You can do this by placing some glue on the bottom of the hat and gluing it to the top front of the snowman’s head. Be careful and take your time, so you do not end up knocking off the snowman’s head or other pieces. Give the glue some time to dry.

7. This step is completely optional. If you would like, you can find a base to glue the bottom of your snowman to. This will help it to stand better. Bases can include heavy construction paper, a small piece of poster board or cardboard, or a paper plate.

As you learn how to make a snowman with crafts, take your time working on it. You may end up messing up if you try to rush through it. Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to create your cotton ball snowman in less time. Remember to be patient if you are working with children on this craft as well. They may need your help with some of the steps. It may take a little while to do this craft, but once you are finished you will have your own handmade snowman! Have fun creating your own cotton ball snowman with this fun winter craft!
