How to Make a Ceviche: Easy Recipe with an Alternative to Raw Fish

Ceviche, Raw Fish

Here is a Ceviche recipe that you can do with ingredients bought from your local grocery store.

The first thing you need is about 2 pounds fish. You can buy different kinds of fish depending on your desired taste. If you like the fish taste to be strong, buy Sea Bass or Halibut fillets. If you like the taste to not be as strong, I recommend Talapia or some White Fish fillets. All of these fish types can be found in the frozen food section of Wal-Mart. They are also usually available in fresh forms as well, but not all groceries have a fresh fish area. You also need some shrimp, fresh or frozen but pre-cooked to save time. Large shrimp should be avoided; the smaller the better. See the bottom of this recipe for how to add shrimp.

Here are the other ingredients you will need:

8 limes for juice or enough cup lime juice to cover fish in bowl. NO PULP

8 cloves garlic: check your ratio if using minced garlic and make sure the juice is drained off. For best results for minced garlic use the dehydrated kind sold in the spices area and add equal parts of water to teaspoons of garlic granules and let soak for about 30 minutes prior to use. Drain of excess water if there is any.

1 jalapeño pepper or 1 habanero pepper depending on your taste, remove seeds and chop

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

1 thinly sliced onion, red or white work equally

How to Prepare Your Dish:

Your fish can be prepared 2 different ways.

If you are worried about raw fish, then you can place your fish in a medium skillet and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil, then remove it and cover it for 5 minutes. If you fish breaks apart, don’t worry, we are going to chop it up anyway.

The 2nd way is how it is served in restraints, by cooking it in the acids from the lime juice. Simply chap your fish in cubes or slice in 1 ½ to 2 inch pieces long and about ¼ inch thick.

After your fish is prepared as one of the techniques above, combine everything including the fish forgather in a bowl except for the onion. Once combined place the onion on top of everything else, but not mixed in. This will allow the onion to absorb the other flavor, and not overpower your dish. Allow this to marinate in the refrigerator covered for about 3 hours.

Remove from fridge, serve, and enjoy!

* If adding shrimp, buy pre-cooked, then thaw if needed, and add to this dish just before serving. If it cooks with the fish in the juices it will become tough and chewy.

You can also add fresh lettuce avocado or lime slices. Only do this after removing the ingredients after marinating in the fridge.
