How to Lighten a Dark Hair Dye Job

Clarifying Shampoo, Color Washing, Dandruff Shampoo, Dying Hair

In a recent attempt to match my natural hair color, I dyed my hair dark brown. My hair was a lot lighter than the lightest color on the box before I dyed it, but it came out much darker than the darkest color on the box was supposed to come out. In the end, my hair came out a very, very dark shade of brown, or nearly black. Needless to say, I was pretty shocked. After calling my hairdresser to find out some of the things that can be done to lighten up overly dark hair dye, I tried them out. After trying some of these methods to lighten a dark hair dye job, my hair is no longer quite as dark.

Clarifying Shampoo

The whole entire purpose of clarifying shampoo is to, well, clarify. It can help eliminate dirt from the hair, as well dead skin. Many people say that it helps take care of dandruff problems, though I cannot find any sources to verify this. That being said, clarifying shampoo can do a whole lot to clean your hair. Thus, it makes a lot of sense that using clarifying shampoo would help get rid of some of the hair dye that may not have been washed out entirely. This is the first thing that my hairdresser told me to do and, after doing it, I noticed that my hair got significantly lighter. However, keep in mind that you cannot use clarifying shampoo too often.

Dandruff Shampoo

My hairdresser then told me that dandruff shampoo can also make the hair a lot lighter. She said that a medicated dandruff shampoo would provide the best results, and make the hair lighter than a regular dandruff shampoo. So, in order to get my hair lighter, I tried out Selson Blue. After washing my hair with this dandruff shampoo only two times, my dark hair was a whole lot lighter than it originally was. I plan to continue doing this every once in awhile to lighten my hair up, but due to the drastic results, I would not do it all the time. For a less drastic method of lightening dark hair dye, Head and Shoulders may be a better option.

Lemon Juice

Although I have not tried this method to lighten up my dark hair dye yet, my hairdresser said that it would work. I know that when I was younger, I wanted blonde hair, but my mother wouldn’t allow me to dye it. To lighten it, I used lemon juice and laid out in the sun. My hair did get a lot lighter. While I probably not try this right after dyeing the hair, it might work after the dye has had time to absorb for a month or so. However, I am not a cosmetologist, nor have I tried this in order to say how effective it would or would not be.

Keep in mind that lightening a dye job is not an easy task. It is better to opt for a lighter shade of hair dye if you are not sure if it is exactly what you want. Gradually getting to the dark shade you are interested in is the best way to go. More importantly, do not dye your hair in an attempt to lighten it because there is a chance that it will turn orange or red. In order to dye on top of dark hair, you will need to bleach it first, but going from dark brown or black to bleach can be very damaging to the hair. If you do want to fix your dark hair dye by dyeing on top of it, it’s a good idea to have it done professionally instead of messing with it yourself. Even though it may be more expensive, you will probably see much better results and less damage in the long run.
