How to Hang Mini Blinds in Your Home

Mini Blinds, Vertical Blinds, Window Frame

Installing mini blinds is an easy process and does not require any special abilities beyond using a measuring tape and a screwdriver. There are a few key points to remember though when you are installing your blinds such as how to measure properly and where to place the brackets. My husband taught me how to install mini-blinds when we moved into our first apartment. I have now also learned how to install vertical blinds as well and like to change the look of a room just by changing the blinds. To quickly learn how to hang your mini-blinds, read the simple instructions below.

1. Determine if you want your mini-blinds to hang on the outside of the window frame or hang inside the window frame. Once this is determined, you will need to measure the windows to determine the exact width of blinds you need. If you want your blinds to look custom designed, mount them inside the window frame; however, be aware that they will not provide as much light protection as those mounted on the outside of the window frame.

**Inside-the-frame Measuring – You will need a minimum of a 1 ½ inch flat surface of frame to mount the brackets. Measure the width of the window frame from side to side where the brackets will be placed (this is your “width”) and then measure from the top of the window frame to the bottom and this will be the “height” of the blinds. Remember that all measurements are being done from INSIDE the widow frame. TIP: a sewing tape measure is sometimes easier to work with when measuring inside the window as it is more flexible.

**Outside-of-the-frame Measuring – For the width, measure from the outside of the window frame where the bracket will be to the other side for the second bracket. It is best to allow at least an inch or two on each side of the window for setting the brackets. For the height, begin measuring above the window at the point on the frame where the top of the blinds will begin to the top of bottom windowsill (inside the sill so that the blinds rest at the bottom of the window).

2. Once you have determined the width and height purchase the mini blinds that fit the dimensions of your window. Remove everything from the box and packaging and review the information and instructions provided. Double check to make sure that all items listed on the instructions were enclosed and you have them.

3. Using your measuring tape again, place a small mark on the window frame where each of the brackets are to be installed using a level to insure that they are lined up evenly. Using a screwdriver, install the brackets by screwing them in place where you have made the marks.

4. Insert the top of the mini-blinds into the brackets keeping the lift cord on the right and the vertical adjustment (usually a long plastic wand) on the left. Snap them or slide them into place in the brackets. Secure the bracket covers.

5. Adjust the blinds with the cord and make sure that they go completely to the top when opened and to the bottom when closed.
