Those of us who live in small spaces are always on the lookout for ways to create additional storage. From simple solutions like inexpensive kitchen carts, to bigger pieces like sectional sofas for small spaces that come with built-in storage, anything that adds storage to a small apartment or house is a worthwhile investment. Below you will find some of the affordable methods I used to create additional storage in my apartment.
Create Storage Space with Underbed Drawers
In a small bedroom, it can be difficult to find space for a dresser, but you have to have somewhere to store your clothes. Since we have a platform bed with room underneath, we opted for four underbed drawers from IKEA. The drawers take up the entire space under our queen-size bed, which resulted in several additional feet of storage space for our clothes.
Create Small Space Storage with Inexpensive Shelves
Small, inexpensive shelving units are ideal for creating additional storage in small spaces. We opted for black wire shelves, which were the cheapest option we could find. Since our plan was to put them inside closets, we were not concerned with their appearance; however, they are attractive enough to have out in a room under the right circumstances. We bought three-shelf wire shelving units for the coat closet, the pantry and our bedroom closet, as well as a four-shelf wire shelving unit for our office closet. We found that Wal Mart and Target had these shelves at the lowest prices, but other good options would be to look for second hand shelves at thrift stores and yard sales.
Create Small Space Storage with a Kitchen Cart
After being unable to find an inexpensive, second hand kitchen cart, we opted for one that was on clearance at Fred Meyer, which is a combination grocery store and department store here in the Pacific Northwest. This particular kitchen cart is ideal for small spaces and has a knife block, towel bar and countertop surface, as well as shelves underneath that now house my slow cooker, colander and other miscellaneous items, as well as baskets full of potatoes and onions.
Create Extra Storage with a Small Space Sectional Sofa
Not all sectional sofas are created equal and most are not appropriate for a small space; however, there are some that come with built-in storage and are specifically designed to be used in small spaces. We ordered our small space sectional sofa from Home Reserve, which creates furniture with built-in storage under every seat. The sectional sofa we ordered also has two ottomans, which provide even more built-in storage space than the seats. The storage space offered by small space sectional sofas designed for this purpose is rather impressive, making sectionals for small spaces truly one of the best options for adding storage to a small apartment or house.
