There are a few things that you will need to connect your DVR to the Internet. First you will need a DSL modem, Internet service, firewall protection, router, Ethernet cable and of course the DVR! Here are the steps to establishing an Internet connection with you DVR. Connect the DVR to the modem using the Ethernet cable. Next your will need to establish an IP address or you can get this from your DSL connection. Simply go to network connections and determine you IP address. Now you will need to make sure your firewall is up and running to protect from external interference. This is easy to do if you already have it installed, just make sure the DVR is connected to the network being protected. If you need to buy one, just set up each device with the program you select. Last you will need to connect your network router to the DVR using another cable. This will enable you to still use your home network through the DVR. It is that simple to connect your DVR to your home computer network. It just takes a few cables, and a little network know how. Most people who use more than one computer at home already have a network established and most computers will detect new settings and guide you through the set up process once you have everything connected. There are pros and cons of DVR’s and the Internet, here are a few to really consider before connecting yours.

You can access your DVR remotely to schedule recordings or delete pending programs.

Cons:

Privacy. Because you are connected to the Internet, you may be more open to who can see your programming choices.

If you have smart neighbors, the may piggyback off your DVR and watch your shows for free while bogging down your Internet speed.

Many DVR’s are not compatible with some of the Pro’s listed, TiVo is but you should double check before buying one or signing a contract if you are really interested in this.

There are many different types of recording devices. Some you own, some you rent from your provider and the plans and pricing vary for each. Be sure to check out what a particular DVR can do and what it is limited to before you sign up. For the long run, it may be worth it to purchase a DVR to have more flexibility, but be aware of the potential increase in plan pricing.
