Homeschool Bible Lesson Plans – the Story of Jonah and the Whale

Bible Lessons

In this homeschool Bible lesson we studied Jonah and the Whale. Kids tend to like this story a lot. My kids really enjoyed this story. We did a cool craft and we baked cupcakes for our recipe. Every Sunday I get my lessons together for the following week. I make 3 copies of the story. I keep one and place the other two in my children’s Bible Lessons binder. I keep a binder for two reasons; one they can follow along with me while I read and two they can always look back on them to refresh their memories. Below I will go through each day of this lesson and what we did. At the end of this article you will find the links to the pages that you will need for this lesson.

The Story of Jonah and the Whale

Day 1 – On day one we read the child’s version of Jonah and the Whale. First, I read the story and then I let the children take turns reading it. Then we discussed what they had read. I let them take turns reading a paragraph. This way I know that they are paying attention. The first day is just basically reading the story and discussing it. This usually takes about 15 – 20 minutes.

Day 2 – On day two we read over the story again. Then we all three did a coloring sheet. Yes, I know that I am too old to color but coloring seems to relax the three of us and it is something we really enjoy doing. This takes about 15 – 20 minutes also.

Day 3 – On day three we read over the story again. Then we did our craft. We made a paper bag whale. This was so neat and all three of us enjoyed it. This whale craft is very inexpensive. The whale is made out of small brown paper bags. You can buy these bags for a dollar or so from your grocery store. The other materials you will probably have laying around the house. Being a homeschool mom we stay pretty stocked on paint, tape, construction paper, and stuff. If you do not want to buy the eyes for the whale you can just draw them on. That’s what we did.

Day 4 – On day four we read over the story of Jonah and the Whale again. Then we baked whale cupcakes. This was cool. Again, this is a very inexpensive recipe. All you will need is a box of cupcakes, food coloring, and something to make the whale tales out of.
