Homemade Diaper Bag and Changing Pad

New Mommy, Reusable Grocery Bags

You ever find yourself needing to change your baby just to find that there is no changing table and you forgot to pack the changing pad, or maybe you don’t have a changing pad with your diaper bag? I came across this problem several times and the other day I came up with a solution. A diaper bag that is soft enough to be used as the changing pad itself!

You will need an old simple plain nylon purse, or you can even use one of the reusable grocery bags that many stores offer (they generally cost around $1-$2), quilt batting, at least 4 different patterns of fabric (I bought 1 yard each, however I did not use all the material so you won’t need a full yard, you could even purchase fat quarter sets if you like), a sewing machine and thread and some fabric glue.

Use a bag or purse that is big enough for your baby to lie down on it.

Wash and dry all your fabric before use, since this will be for a baby and their skin may come in contact with it, I recommend using Dreft or some other laundry detergent designed specifically for baby’s delicate sensitive skin.

You will want to cut the fabric into squares 4 inches by 4 inches.

Bring the corners of each square together so all four corners are touching each other. Then sew the sides shut, but do not sew all the way to the end of the corners (leave the corners unsewn so you have a small hole where the 4 corners met in the middle.

Turn the fabric inside out through this hole in the center. Fill the square with quilt batting creating a nice soft ball.

Glue the ball onto the outside of the bag. Continue doing this with the balls of fabric until the entire side of the bag is covered. Allow to dry and then flip the bag over and repeat on the other side.

Now, every where you go you will always have a changing pad to use as long as you have your diaper bag. And your bag will be unique so you won’t be getting it confused with other mommy’s bags when you go to play dates. Everyone will be wanting your unique diaper bag, especially when they see you use it as a cushiony changing pad. You can now change your baby anywhere, the ground, the table top or a changing table.

If you know a new mommy or a soon to be mommy, this will make the perfect gift for her and she will love you for it the first time she uses it! Best of all this changing pad has more padding and is softer for baby than others on the market so baby will feel more secure and comfortable.

If the diaper bag gets dirty, simply throw it in the wash with the rest of baby’s clothes and wash in the baby detergent.
