Home Remedies for Nausea: Cola Syrup, Ginger, Saltine Crackers and Tea

Pedialyte

Nausea! Ahh, who hasn’t had it. It comes in the form of a stomach bug, or accepted as part of pregnancy. We get nauseas when we see or smell something foul. It’s that warm grumble in your stomach that makes it hard to speak with out gagging. Am I being descriptive enough? I think we are all truly very used to being nauseas from time to time. Even worse though, we may believe that there is still nothing that we can do to relive it.

Outside of peptobismol and a few other over the counter medicines we are not left with much choice but to deal with it. Well, I have found some really good home remedies that really work to relieve nausea and vomiting. As a matter of fact, most of this stuff is inexpensive, and can be kept on hand so your medicine “pantry” has the necessities to ward off your next nausea bug.

First comes my favorite; Cola syrup. I have never heard of this before until my mother in law swore by it so much, she bought me a bottle. Yeah, we are so reluctant to take the wise couple of our in laws, and you know there’s a good chance they are right! Coal syrup can be bought at most drug stores of pharmacies, or on line. The best thing is it has no medicine in it at all. It is literally the substance that makes cola beverages. Because of this, however, diabetics are warned not to take it. It is very sugary. It smells just like cola, and taste like an overly concentrated form of it, because hey, that’s what it is.

Cola syrup is highly effective in battleing=ing nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting. I have found that as soon as I give it to my 4 year old, he is able to relax with little to no vomiting after wards. It doesn’t taste gross, so kids and adults can take it without adding an extra gag. Read the directions on the bottle. The typical direction is 1-2 tablespoons over crushed ice, sip slowly.

Next, is a relatively easy remedy if you have fresh ginger on hand. Grate some ginger on a cheese grater. and squeeze the juice from the ginger with your hand into 4-oz. of ginger ale. Next add 4 oz of pedialyte. You can use plain pedialyte or cherry for a flavored drink. Sip slowly and drink often. The pedialyte replenishes lost minerals in your body, such as potassium and help keep you hydrated, while the Ginger calms your tummy.

The third is a very simple tip and can be combined with the other two! Saltine Crackers. Enough said, but i will still go into detail a bit. Keeping saltine crackers on hand is a great idea to help relive all sorts of stomach upsets, including indigestion. Simply because the dryness of the cracker takes your stomach acids and washed them back down. The salt is also an electrolyte that replaces minerals. Even better, after eating a few crackers you start to feel thirsty and can usually tolerate water or ginger ale ads long as you sip them slowly. Slowly is always the key. A huge influx of water on a sour stomach can be “rejected” causing more vomiting.

My fourth simple solution to nausea is tea. Not just any tea though. There are several teas that you can buy at a health food store, or may even be able to find at your local grocery store. Ginger tea is great for settling the stomach, Ginger it’s self is great for the tummy. Also peppermint tea can also calm nausea and vomiting. Chamomile tea works good to, in conjunction with the other two. It helps calm you down and settle your nerves. Less tension, more time to relax! Again, sip the tea, and only drink as much as you feel you can handle. You are not gulping it down. Little by little is the key.

Hopefully you have found that treating your upset stomach may be as easy as opening up your pantry, rather than medicine cabinet!
