This neat craft project using vintage silverware took inspiration from those great old coat and hat hooks, the kind that are wood and fold up. They look like X’s in a row when expanded. I have seen them every where and I am sure you have too. Vintage or heirloom silverware is the perfect material for this simple tea cup holder. If you were able to find a selection of large vintage serving pieces, then you might could make this project large enough to be a cool coat hook in a retro or vintage kitchen.
Anyway, regular old vintage silver spoons, forks, and knives make the perfect size for a tea cup or coffee cup holder.
To Make a Tea Cup Holder Out of Vintage or Antique Silverware Cutlery You Will need:
1 Pieces of antique silverware cutlery (2 fork, 4 spoons, or 4 knives)
Metal Drill Bit
Power Drill
Small Nuts and Bolts
Silver or Silver painted tea cup hooks (the kind that screw in are best)
Wooden Plaque cut to size
Picture hanging hooks
Duct Tape
Paint, wood wax, or stain (optional)
Now, go ahead and drill a hole in the end of each piece of silverware. Use a metal cutting drill bit that can easily drill through metal objects. There are a variety on the market and they fit virtually any power drill. If you are having trouble finding them, then ask your sales person to show you where they are. Make sure you buy a drill bit that matches the size of your nuts and bolts. The tea cup hooks will also be drill though here, so make the drill bit fits them as well. You can also oversize the hole, but a too small hole will make this project impossible.
Now, Make X’s with your spoons and knives. One spoon and one knife should be crossing each other. Now, go ahead and bolt them together in a connected row of X’s. Secure the nuts and bolts tightly, because ether is a little more drilling of the vintage silverware involved here.
Now, measure how long and wide this row of silverware X’s are. You wood plaque should be about two inches taller and two inches wider. You can paint this wood, stain it, or even rub some tinted wood wax on it. You decide! Make it match your kitchen!
Now, tape the large row of X’s down. Do not tape where the middle of the X’s are.
Use your metal drill bit to drill through the middle of each X. Go through both pieces of vintage silverware cutlery.
Now, remove the tape.
Go ahead and attach one fork to each end of the row of X’s. You can bolt in on the bottom of the handle of the fork. At the top you can use a small dab of epoxy glue to hole it in place. You may not need this because this is a sturdy little shape.
Now, screw your tea cup hooks into the center hole of every X that you just drilled. I like to put a small dab of epoxy or cement glue in the hole, then add the teacup hook.
Now, if you bought tea cup hooks that had a long screw in the back you can simple use those screw to hold the entire silverware creation to the plaque of wood. Simply lay the row of X’s made of silverware on the plaque. Hold it in place while you screw in the tea cup hooks. If not, then simply attach it to the finished piece of wood with some epoxy glue. Do not go overboard or the glue will seep out behind the vintage silverware and be viable.
Let the epoxy glue dry overnight.
Now, attach your picture hanging hook to the back of the vintage silverware tea cup holder. Hang on the kitchen wall and you are finished!
