Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Apple Cinnamon Square-Ems Cereal Review

Apple Cinnamon, Ascorbic Acid, Organic Cereal

Very recently someone gave my son two different cereal boxes. They were organic cereals so I didn’t mind in the least and actually thought that they would be a nice treat for him, his breakfast usually consist of toast and fruit and so I am sure that he would like this much more. It worked out well too because at his age, nearly two, he is just now getting comfortable eating cereal by himself. One of the cereals that he received was Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Apple Cinnamon Square-Ems Cereal. This was the first time that we had tried anything by this brand but cereal certainly sounded good.

I thought that the cereal may be like Life Cereal with a name like Square-Ems but actually its square pieces were much, much larger than life cereal. On top of being large they also didn’t soften in milk like you find with other cereals. In addition to being crunchy the Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Apple Cinnamon Square-Ems Cereal were also very, very sweet. I tried a bowl and didn’t prefer it personally. My son liked it in a bowl with some rice milk but he also like to snack on it dry and ended up preferring that. So it turned out that the cereal became more like a cracker or cookie snack that he could have. Unlike cookies though I knew it would give him much better nutrition.

The nutrition for this cereal is based on one and one fourth cup. Normally you find cereals that servings are between a half of cup and a full cup so I was surprised to see that the serving size for this cereal had an added one fourth cup. I imagine though that this increase is due to the fact that the individual pieces, which are not solid, in the cereal are so large. In each serving of Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Apple Cinnamon Square-Ems Cereal there are two hundred and ten calories with thirty calories from fat. There is only one hundred and twenty five milligrams of sodium and one hundred and eighty milligrams of potassium. The cereal offers forty four grams of carbohydrates, eight grams of fiber, twelve grams of sugars and five grams of protein in every serving as well. There is twenty percent of your daily need of niacin and riboflavin, twenty five percent for vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, thirty percent for thiamin and iron, four percent for calcium and eight percent for vitamin C. I thought that the amount of vitamin C that came with this cereal was amazing and wondered what was in it that made that so.

The ingredients of Healthy Valley Organic Multigrain Apple Cinnamon Square-Ems Cereal are organic whole oat flour, organic whole wheat flour, organic evaporated cane juice, organic oat fiber, organic sunflower and/or safflower oil, organic molasses, dried apple granules, sea salt, natural flavors from apples and cinnamon, organic cinnamon, soy lecithin, natural vitamin E and ascorbic acid, which are both used for freshness and lastly annatto is added for natural color. I thought that the ingredients looked very good and assumed that the vitamin C amount was in part from the ascorbic acid that was added. I would recommend getting this cereal as a dry snack as I didn’t really care for it in a bowl with milk. It is very sweet, but as a snack doesn’t seem to be nearly as overwhelmingly sweet. I don’t plan on getting it but when it is on sale it goes for two boxes for five dollars. Each box contains about five servings so it won’t last but a standard work week. We enjoyed the box while it lasted even if we weren’t eating it with milk.
