The Napa River Inn, in Napa, California enjoys a location the famous Napa Valley Wine Region. Napa Valley Wine Country is a popular destination for vacation getaways, where travelers enjoy the scenic beauty of the country and the wine tastings at the area wineries. There are been a number of reports that Napa River Inn, in Northern California is haunted.

In the 1800’s, Napa Valley was an agricultural area. Napa City was a center of business and industry. It was in the late 1800’s that the Hatt Mill Building was made and operated as a feed store and warehouse. The Hatt Building was operated as a feed store until the late 1900’s. Recently the feed store was converted into a luxury boutique hotel.

There have also been reports of hearing a man’s footsteps walking down the hall. Guests have reported strange sounds and smells. Doors open and close by themselves. The elevators would go up and down, when no one was there to operate them. Some of the spirits are believed to be former owners of the building and family members of the owners.

Ghost Stories

The Hatt Mill Building was built in 1886. The building was used as a warehouse and feed store The son of the building’s original owner, Captain Albert Hatt and his wife, Margaret, seem to be frequent visitors.

Albert Hatt Jr. married a woman named Margaret Riley in 1889. The couple had five children together. Margaret died in 1906. Albert Hatt Jr, 46, became overwhelmed with childcare responsibilities and was in poor health. In 1912, Albert Hatt Jr. hung himself in the warehouse. The area that he hung himself in is now occupied by Sweetie Pies Bakery.

The first ghost sightings were visions of a woman. The woman is wearing a white dress and seems to be searching for someone. It may be Margaret, possible trying to stop Albert from taking his life.

There have been reports of mysterious, supernatural happenings at the Inn. There are reports of other ghosts and haunting at the Napa River Inn. One guest met a man who identified himself as Robert Keig, who had purchased the mill from Captain Hatt in 1912. There have also been reports of hearing a man’s footsteps walking down the hall. Guests have reported strange sounds and smells. Doors open and close by themselves. The elevators would go up and down, when no one was there to operate them.

A guest at the inn complained to the front desk that strange noises and “whites blobs in the mirror” were preventing her from getting sleep. The woman poured herself a glass of wine to calm her nerves. She turned and found that the glass had been drained. . She assumed she was being absentminded, and poured herself another glass. She took a shower and again found the glass had been drained. The guest insisted that she had not taken a sip. The spirit of that night seems to enjoy wine produced in the famous wine valley.

History of the Napa River Inn

This inn is nested into the heart of Napa Valley. Napa Valley is a famous wine producing area with highly regarded Napa Valley vineyards.

In the mid 1800’s the Napa River was an area with bustling trade. The shores of the Napa River were lined with industrial plants. The waterway was used to transport people and raw and manufactured goods.

Captain Albert Hatt was a sailor from Germany who purchased the land on the Napa River. Captain Hatt built the Hatt Building, which was originally used as a warehouse. Upstairs there was a roller skating rink built of White Rock maple. The silo section was built for storage. Another building housed the machinery that was used to crush and clean grains.

Captain Hatt’s building was situated on two acres with adjacent wharves, positioned in the heart of the business activity.

Captain Hatt was married to Alma Hogan. The couple had six children. One of the children was Albert Hatt Jr. Albert married Margaret Riley in 1889. Albert and Margaret had five children. Margaret died of a tumor in 1906. Margaret and Albert Hatt Jr. were a loving couple and were devoted to each other. Albert Hall Jr. became overwhelmed and hung himself.

At the time of his son’s death, Captain Hatt was a widower and ready to retire. Robert Keig purchased the Mill from Captain Hatt in 1912, which has the same year that Captain Hatt’s son, Albert, committed suicide. Captain Hatt moved to San Francisco and lived the remainder of his life with his daughter and her family.

Robert Keig purchased Mill in 1912. The Keig family operated the Napa Feed Store until 1974.
