Hanging Wicker Baskets Become Works of Art

Us Flag, Wicker Baskets

It stands to reason that if you hang just about anything on a wall, it will give it a whole new look, but if you want an easy look that definitely adds class to the room, hang your wicker baskets on the walls! Of course, there’s a method to my madness. You don’t just hang ’em and forget ’em, no! You make them into useful or decorative works of art, but don’t be surprised if your friends and family swipe your ideas to decorate their own homes!

Deep, rectangular baskets are the perfect way to add depth and interest to a room. Hang them vertically or horizontally, then start the simple art project. Baskets with a liner are great, because they give a backdrop to your newest creation, but ordinary baskets work fine as well.

The basket can hold a statuette, or an entire mini scene. You can house everything in the baskets from photos, to candles (non-lit), to flower arrangements. Feature a special piece of pottery, display a folded US flag, or just arrange some shells and starfish.

The baskets serve to make art and decor pieces for most any room in the house. Make a simple arrangement on the wall in the bathroom, of several baskets, then stack towels, bath salts and other bath items.

In the kitchen, make an arrangement of the baskets, then display kitchen collectibles, unique canisters or boxes, coffee mugs, or other kitchen items. The displays can be very elegant, containing costly collector’s items, or can be utilitarian, containing hand towels or spices.

Hang the baskets in a little girl’s room to hold her favorite Beanies or stuffed animals. Or, hang them in a boy’s room to house his model car collection. The great thing about wicker baskets is they can be painted to suit any decor – boy or girl’s.

Using the baskets as art, in rooms like the den or main room, creates an eye-popping decor arrangement that will grab the visitor’s eye in a second. Place the baskets on the wall, to where the bottom of the basket is affixed to the wall. Choose your own patterns of how many baskets, which ones will be horizontal or vertical, and what type of creation you want to make. You can also turn the baskets to where the opening faces the wall, then use them as shelves to hold books and whatnots.

Whether setting the basket openings away from the wall, or towards it, you can face a little trouble getting the art or display to sit levelly on the rough wicker, so basket liners are a must for certain types of displays. Slide a piece of cardboard between the basket and the liner, then set the display items. This will help them remain sturdy. Some display pieces, with large, flat bases, can sit on the bare wicker without needing the cardboard, though.

If you’re worried that certain objects might fall out of the baskets, you can make a different basket wall display by following all the previous steps, then wrapping the basket in a hair net or something similar. The net ill give a totally different look to the basket, and will protect tiny treasures. The net can be a piece of see-thru lace, roping placed in a tic-tac-toe design, ribbon pieces, part of a fishnet stocking, or any number of netted cloths.

Since hanging baskets takes only moments, and placing the art work or other objects inside, takes only a few more moments, you can give any room a whole new look in literally minutes. Get creative! Spray paint the baskets, then attach things like seashells, starfish, brass or bronze pieces, metallic monograms, bows, charms or other embellishments.

The baskets can be large or small, turned this way and that, but usually it’s best to stick with baskets which are squarely shaped. Butt them together and make a full-wall display or book case, or separate them, turn them, and make your own unique creation. You’ll love this project since it’s simple yet impressive!
