Guide to Bathrooms: A Cleaning Checklist

If you’re like me, the bathroom is your least favorite room to clean. That being said, you may rush through the room, just to get it over with. Unfortunately, that may mean your bathroom isn’t as clean as it could be. Over time, this can result in a bathroom that’s full of hidden bacterial breeding grounds. This checklist will help you remember to clean everything in your bathroom, whether it needs to be cleaned weekly, monthly or seasonally.

Weekly Cleaning Tasks in the Bathroom

On a weekly basis, you should be cleaning the areas that get the most use. This would be your sink, your toilet, your shower and your bathtub. Using your chosen disinfectant product, be sure to scrub the areas thoroughly to remove any buildup of soap scum or other unwanted buildups.

Remember, when cleaning the toilet, be sure to wipe down the outside of the bowl, the tank, the handle and the lid; otherwise you’re leaving behind bacteria by only cleaning the interior of the bowl. Also, don’t forget to clean the shower head, faucets, edge and exterior of your bathtub or sink.

If necessary, you should sweep and mop your bathroom at least once a week, though some bathrooms may only need this once a month, depending on the frequency the bathroom is used. For example, guest bathrooms may not need a weekly cleaning.

Lastly, don’t forget the little things in your bathroom. Remember to wipe down the door knobs, windowsills and of course, your toothbrush holder.

At least once every three to six months, you will need to clean areas that you might not regularly tend to. To start, you should clean your bathroom fan or other vents in the room using a vacuum with a brush attachment, duster or even a broom.

You should also wipe down your shower rod and clean your shower curtain rings, as dust can build up and over time, your rings will not wiping down your shower rod and your rings may not run as smoothly over the rod.

You should also clean out your medicine cabinet and closet, throwing out any medications or products that have expired or that you no longer use. While you’re in there, be sure to wipe down shelves and remove any dust or other buildup that has occurred.

Lastly, don’t forget to wipe down the inside and outside of any windows that are in your bathroom.
