Great ideas for inexpensive curtains are all around you. Inexpensive curtains can be beautiful, add design, and look custom. We have all had our first new home and really wanted to decorate it beautifully. Curtains can be expensive, but if you know how, you can make your own custom curtains on a small budget. Be prepared to look outside the box and take inspiration form a variety of sources.
Custom curtains for a little boy’s room or a man’s sports room can be created out of old sporting jerseys. Take you rod and string it through the sleeves of the jersey. Lay it back up on its brackets. This is a good way to display collected jerseys in a small space. You could also String a row of old baseball gloves along a curtain rod. For a little girl’s room you could do the same idea as before but with cute little sundresses or those one-piece ballerina and tutu combos for little girls. If you prefer the pocket curtain look you can easily fold over about three inches of fabric and sew a straight line across to create the pocket. A product like no Sew would work well too. You can hem your custom curtains to a specific length using No Sew as well. For a little added interest at the top by an extra long tablecloth. Fold about one foot of the fabric over to create a sort of faux valance. Use the clips or create a pocket to hang on your rod. Sewing your own curtains from inexpensive fabrics you buy at the fabric store is another great way to create e custom curtains. You can do this project with little or no sewing experience. Buy a fabric you like in the length you need. Use No Sew or you sewing machine to hem the fabric at the top and the bottom. Attach with clips or create the rod pocket as described before. For a more expensive look at some lining. By inexpensive curtain lining fabric and No Sew it into the back of your fabric. Treat this like you would if you were sewing a pillowcase inside out. Once you have three sides finished, turn the curtain inside out and turn the rough edges on the bottom in. Sew them together. You just made your own inexpensive custom curtains. Bed sheets also make great inexpensive fabric for this project. Best of all they are already hemmed for you.
Quilts make fabulous inexpensive custom curtains that truly look luxurious. Inexpensive good-looking quilts can be purchased in a variety of lengths and sizes at stores like Target, Wal-Mart, and K-Mart. Use clips to hang them from your rod. Use a vintage ribbon to tie it together loosely in the middle. This will let light in and add some more design interest.
If you have really tall windows and can’t find pre-made curtains that look good or match existing pre made curtains on smaller windows, try buying that long piece of fabric in the pre made curtain section meant to be swags. Cut is down to the desired length and you can match the fabric of curtain on windows you were able to fit with pre made curtain.
Napkins, bandannas, and place mats all make great valances and you don’t have to sew! Drape them over the top of your rod. They look really good if you drape them over do that a point hangs down.
