Getting Rid of White Flakes in Your Hair: Denorex Dandruff Shampoo Vs. Head and Shoulders

Dandruff Shampoo, Head and Shoulders, Permed Hair

Proctor and Gamble’s Head and Shoulders is probably the oldest dandruff shampoo still on the market, but is it the best? I don’t think so, and here’s why:

one problem I’ve always had with Head and Shoulders is that while it controls dandruff very well, it seems to be overly harsh resulting in dry hair. Denorex, on the other hand, even the extra strength version recommended for moderate dandruff, can be used daily or almost every day. I use the 2 in 1 extra strength which includes a conditioner. I have been using it nearly daily for years, hard to control dandruff and all, (I can’t stand itchy scalp or flakes all over my shirt) with no ill effects on my hair.

Denorex has had former Dallas Cowboy and Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson, who I recently had the opportunity to meet, as a pitchman over the years, compared to Head and Shoulder’s Vanessa Marcil among others. If I had to be deserted on an Island with either, Jimmy, sorry guy, but you’re voted off the island. Can you imagine Jimmy Johnson and John Edwards on an island fighting over the last can of hair spray? Sounds like an idea for a “reality show”. Remember, you read it here first. If this Presidential race doesn’t work out, Senator…

However, the products Johnson and Marcil were pitching are another story. While Head and Shoulders is known for being harsh and creating dry, brittle hair, Denorex is just as good at controlling dandruff without drying out the hair.

Denorex contains pleasant smelling menthol and is non-drying due to the absence of alcohol in part. Denorex controls psoriasis with the largest dosage of pyrithione zinc available without a prescription. Denorex’ 2% pyrithione zinc is twice as much as that of Head and Shoulders. Denorex is gentle and effective in inhibiting the growth of P. Ovale, an orgainism which medical experts believe is a leading cause of dandruff.

Denorex is safe for color-treated or permed hair and will not yellow gray or silver hair, while preventing the itching, scaling and embarrassing flaking associated with psoriasis and dandruff. It also contains provitamin B-5 for healthy, good looking hair. Denorex is 3% salicylic acid, the active ingredient, which eliminates dandruff and helps to keep it from coming back.

Built in conditioners provide the body and shine you would expect from a separate conditioner, it says on the back of the bottle, and I have found that to be true. Unlike Head and Shoulders, Denorex has a soothing feel as you work it into your scalp. And just because Jimmy Johnson uses it doesn’t mean you will have that helmet haired look that the Fox Sports commentator is famous for.

Denorex is available in most stores and pharmacies that carry hair products and is available in several scents, as well. It is available for mild, moderate and severe dandruff. The mild formula may be used every day, if you so choose. The extra strength formula is recommended to be used twice a week or as prescribed by a physician. I have had no problems using it nearly every day for years, a must to control my problem dandruff. If not used at least five times a week, the flakes start returning. I would not think of using Head and Shoulders that often.

While Head and Shoulders is effective at ridding oneself of dandruff, one would have to have bionic hair for your follicles to survive such a beating. Maybe John Edwards would qualify, but most of us would not.

Denorex is distributed by Medtech Products, Inc. of Jackson, WY and is a Prestige Brands company. The product is readily available and while it is slightly more expensive than Head and Shoulders, it is worth the difference, in my opinion. Once again, you get what you pay for. A twelve ounce bottle lasts for months in our household. I do use this product, have for years and would heartily recommend it for your family.
