Heel pain is probably one of the most common foot problems in most people. It’s important that you do whatever it takes to get on top of this problem as soon as possible. If pain in your heels persists for an extended period, it’s always best to check with your doctor or a qualified medical professional. Calcified deposits, heel spurs, or stress fractures may also be the cause of pain. A physician can assist you with these conditions. Heel pain can be difficult to cure, but most cases can be relieved easily. Here’s a few tips to help get rid of heel pain.

Get up and out. Sitting all day can be one of the worst things to do to your feet. What happens is the calf muscles can tighten up and pull on the tendons and ligaments in your heels, causing pain. Get out and walk around the office or stand about 2-3 feet from a wall, leaving your feet flat on the floor and leaning into the wall. This will stretch out your calf muscles and relive the tension, and pain in your heels.

Get rid of shoes that have little or no support. If you like to wear flip flops all the time, you need to know that these types of shoes provide very little, if any support for your feet. The strain on your calf muscles can strain the Achilles tendon and the connective tissue in your heels causing pain. Get yourself some sandals with arch support.

Get rid of excess weight. I know, you know you might be a bit overweight, up to 70% of Americans are. It’s a big club. Carrying a few extra pounds will add additional strain to the muscles and tendons connected to your heels.

Get some good quality orthotics, or shoe inserts, that cushion your heels during sports or strenuous activities. Good orthotics are going to cost more, but relief from pain may be worth it.
Get rid of worn out shoes. Replace your shoes every 3-6 months or when the soles look noticeably worn. Over-worn shoes can cause plantar fasciitis which is an inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel and toes.

Get some relief by icing your heels and staying off your feet for a while, especially if you have overdone it. Rest gives your body time to heal and rebuild. Sometimes, all your heels need are a comfortable cushion and a brief period of rest.
