Best Walking Trails, Free Summer Activities, Snacks for Hiking

Reno, Nevada is a great place to visit this summer and has something for everyone. Its logo biggest little City is true. Situated on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Reno is home to some 200,000 people. Its location means that you are within an hour’s drive of the beautiful Lake Tahoe and many other pictureous mountain sights. Reno itself has many outdoor activities ranging from golf, bike trails, numerous parks, water parks, outdoor markets and more. For those that prefer a more sedate pace the shopping and gaming facilities are numerous. Not all activities and attractions cost money and here are some of the free summer activities for you to enjoy.

Wingfield Park is located in downtown Reno near First and West Streets. It is a great spot to relax in the shade and watch kayakers take on the Truckee River. The Truckee River pathway for biking and walking passes through the Park. Throughout the summer months, free music concerts are performed at the Park. Bike trails are numerous throughout the region. Google bike trails in Reno and Tahoe and you will find many. For a fun, easy ride try the bike trail that follows the Truckee River as it winds through Reno. One starting point is Wingfield Park near First Street. The pathway goes for miles in both directions.

Sparks Marina is a large man made lake with a two-mile walking trail and swimming beaches. Take I 80 East to McCarran Boulevard. In August the WWA Wakeboard World Championships will be held at the Marina and is free to watch.

Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is home to local wildlife and has many walking trails, open grass areas and a large kid’s playground. There is plenty of shade for those hot summer days. Located off North McCarran Boulevard and South Virginia Streets.

Walking and hiking trails abound with the Sierra Nevada mountain range close by. Google the US Forest Service hiking trails. The pathways along the Truckee River are used for both biking and walking. For hiking head to Galena Creek Park, 18350Mount Rose Highway. There are a number of hiking trails ranging from short, easy kid friendly trails to strenuous climbs into the Sierra Nevada’s.

Rattlesnake Mountain Skate Park is boosted to be the largest skate park in the west. It is enjoyed by many skateboarders and BMX riders. It is located on South McCarran near Mira Loma.

Every Thursday during summer the Farmer’s Market in Sparks features free music and entertainment. The market starts at 4pm and is located at Victorian Square in Sparks. Take I80 East to Pyramid exit.

Sierra Safari Zoo located on the outskirts of Reno offers free admission on Mondays (except holidays).

Hot August Nights is a week long event held in early August. It is an annual event featuring classic cars and hot rods. Go to www.hotaugustnights.net for event listings.

The following activities are free to children with accompanying paying adults.

Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, a short drive from Reno offers free admission to children.

National Automobile Museum is free for children aged 5 and younger.
