Applique, Pillow Cases

Have you ever wondered why manufacturers charge so much for pillow cases? That is because they have a huge markup, something like 400% or more, on their durable goods. The reason I know the markups are high is because I worked in a grocery store for more than 10 years. The markup on some of the items made in-store would be 200% to 1000% depending on the item.

This to me is insane since most of the material pillowcases are made from can be bought at any store that sells fabric. I have found many of these fabric stores where I live often have fabric on sale for less than a set of plain pillowcases. Or, at least near the same price as a set of cheap pillowcases.

With the price of pillowcases without the sheets, makes me use the ones I have until they are beyond repair. The money I earn; I work hard for and I know you do too. Knowing that saving money whenever you can is a huge bonus for many of us.

Having the basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine, a tape measure, and seam allowances, anyone can make their own pillowcases. Yes, I know, buying pillowcases that are already made is easier than making them yourself. But, wouldn’t saving a couple of bucks be worth making your own?

Think about it, you have three beds in your home and each has two standard pillows per bed, wouldn’t saving about $12 be worth it? $12 for some people would mean being able to buy enough milk and cereal for their kids for a week or close to it.
