Many people are intrigued by free. Free means that someone is probably willing to try something they’ve never had before. This is the idea behind these free music mp3 downloads – most of them are from sites that are trying to help Independent artists break into the music scene, but some are new hits from your favorite artists.
1. Amazon.com MP3 Downloads – this is my favorite. When you visit Amazon’s mp3 site, you have two options available on the left sidebar that will provide you with free music: Free Music from Rising Artists and Free Songs & Special Deals. When you do choose to get an mp3 from Amazon, you will have to move it to the Amazon Cloud Player (also free) and download it to your computer from there. Amazon has so many free downloads available that you can wile away hours sampling and downloading.
2. Last.fm – Last.fm has about 25 pages of free mp3 downloads available, and most of these are from emerging artists. There are definitely some great songs here, though, and you can single out the artists you fit in your normal genre if the idea of new artists worry you.
3. Birp.fm Playlists – BIRP focuses on Indie artists. This is a fun site because you have two options for downloads: Community Playlists and Year Playlists. The Community Playlists are created by those who use BIRP – each person may upload one track and when this totals 100 songs, the list is made available for download and the process repeats. The Year Playlists has over 100 songs on each month that is chosen by the website creator. All of this music altogether allows for, again, hours of song downloading.
4. iTunes store – the traditional route. If you have iTunes software on your computer, be sure to visit the iTunes store weekly and scroll to the bottom to peruse their free downloads – usually one song from an artist you’ve heard of, one from an unknown, one music video, and a few tv/video clips.
