The Frank Lloyd Wright and Studio was the Wright family residence from 1889 to 1909. Wright began construction of the house in 1889, shortly after marriage to Catherine Tobin. The Wright family, including their six children lived in this house while he developed his architectural practice, creating what became the “Prairie Style” of architecture.

Originally, the room in the front of the house on the second floor served as his drafting room, until the completed the Studio Annex in 1898. The two story polygonal Bay on the south side was added in 1895. The children’s playroom received light from rows of art glass windows, along both the north and south walls, and from the overhead skylight, creating an ethereal effect.

The restoration of the Frank Lloyd Home and Studio was an intensive effort that spanned 13 years and cost $3 million. The Home and Studio are now open to the public, as a historic house museum. The building has been restored to it’s 1909 appearance. In 1987, The American Institute of Architects recognized this restoration with a prestigious National Honor award.
