Recently an article was published in Charisma & Christian Life Magazine, in the August 2009 edition. It is called “Foods That Heal” by Dr. Don Colbert. According to Dr. Colbert, “Poor Nutrition is often the reason people get sick. Here are 10 foods you need to add to your diet.”

The first is blueberries. According to Dr.Colbert, “Blueberries contain polyphenols that protect the brain from inflammation and oxidative stress, which in turn may protect the brain from degenerative effects of aging and from injury from ischemic stroke.” Dr. Colbert believes that blueberries may even prevent other diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He suggests to have a little each day and they should be organic.

The second is pomegranate. According to Dr. Colbert, “Pomegranates protects your heart by protecting arterial walls and improving blood flow to the heart.” It can also protect you from getting a heart attack because it can keep your bad cholesterol under control.

The third is acai berries. Dr. Colbert says that, “Acai is rich in antioxidants such as Vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium. It is also a good source of omega – 3s, fiber, protein, carbohydrates and minerals.”

The fourth is broccoli sprouts. These contain a compound called “sulforaphane” which protects against cancer.

The fifth is sprouted breads. Although Dr. Colbert recommends whole wheat, he also strongly suggests “Ezekiel and Manna” bread. These are made from sprouted grains.

The sixth is olive oil. Dr. Colbert says that, “You should eat fat every day for the health of your heart, brain, skin, hair and every part of you. Good fat, which includes monounsaturated fat, nourishes and strengthens cell membranes.” Other foods that contain monounsaturated fats are peanut butter, olives, avocados, almonds, walnuts and hazelnuts.

The seventh is almonds. Dr. Colbert recommends raw nuts and seeds, not roasted, toasted or salted. These are high in monounsaturated fats. They also have protein.

The eighth is fiber. We need about 25-30 grams of fiber each day according to Dr. Colbert. Most people only get about 12 grams or less.

The ninth is wild salmon. Wild salmon is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are found mainly in cold-water fish, some marine mammals and algae.” This can also prevent Alzeimer’s and Dementia. It can also prevent a stroke or heart attack.

The tenth and final one is lean, free-range meat. According to Dr. Colbert, “Because an animal’s body will store pesticides and other chemicals in its fatty tissues, the riskiest foods are the fatty cuts of meat.” He suggests eating leaner cuts of meat that do not have pesticides. Chicken and turkey are good examples of leaner meats.

According to Dr. Colbert, “You really are what you eat.” Your clothes may be made of cotton, polyester, rayon or silk, but your body is made up of whatever you put in your mouth.” Colbert recommends eating foods in their purest natural state. Dr. Colbert states that “Former generations were some of the healthiest on the planet. Today our lifestyle is too fast-paced for us to do that, and as a result, our diet suffers.” Dr. Colbert recommends for us to replace some of the processed foods that we eat, with some or all of the 10 things mentioned above.
