Cassia, Flowering Trees

Some people may think of palm trees when they first envision a trip to Florida, but there are indeed many other varieties of trees throughout the state. Some of these trees even produce blossoming flowers in the winter and all year long, giving those within the state the opportunity to enjoy beautiful trees and flowers no matter the season.

Fall and Winter

Trees that are 40 feet or taller and produce flowers in the fall and winter include the golden raintree or Koelreuteria elegans and the African tulip or Spathodea campanulata. Trees between 20 and 40 feet tall include the Spectactular Senna or Senna spectabilis, Colville’s glory or Colvillea racemosa, Hong Kong orchid or Bauhinia blakeana and the orchid tree or Bauhinia purpurea. The Twin Senna or Senna polyphylla grows to height of 20 feet or less.

Winter

The Red powderpuff or Calliandra haematocephala and the Pink starburst, also known as Clerodendrum quadriloculare, grow to a height of 20 feet or less. The flame of the forest or Butea monosperma and the rose of Venezuela, also known as the Brownea grandiceps grow between 20 and 40 feet in height. The Red silk floss or Bombax ceiba and the Puerto Rican violet tree, also known as the Polygala cowellii, can each grow to be 40 feet or larger.

Winter and Spring

The star burst tree or Cassia quinquangulatum and the Compton tree, also known as Caesalpinia pulcherrima, each grow to a height of less than 20 feet. Tress that grow between 20 and 40 feet include the yellow saraca or Saraca cauliflora, Ipª do cerrado or Tabebuia ochracea, the sorrowless tree or Saraca indica, the lantern brownea or Brownea coccinea, the Panama Flame or Brownea macrophylla and the the red saraca or Saraca declinata. The fern tree or Schizolobium parahybum, the long john tree or Triplaris cumingiana and the shaving brush or Pseudobombax ellipticum all grow to a height of 40 feet or taller.

Summer, Fall and Winter

The vera tree, also known as the Bulnesia arborea, grows to a height of 40 feet or taller. It blossoms all through the summer, fall and winter months.

Fall, Winter and Spring

The scrambled egg tree, also known as Cassia surattensis, grows to a height of less than 20 feet. This tree blossoms all throughout the fall, winter and spring months.

All Year

The caesalpinia tree or Caesalpinia Mexicana and the needle flower tree, also known as Posoqueria latifolia, flower on and off throughout the year and grow to a height of less than 20 feet. Trees that grow to be 20 to 40 feet in height and bloom all year include the Calabash or Crescentia cujete, white Geiger or Cordia boissieri, ylang-ylang or Cananga odorata, yellow cordial or cordia lutea, champak or Michelia champaca, yellow elder or Tecoma stans, pink trumpet or Tabebuia heterophylla, lignum vitae or Guiacum sanctum, the jacaranda or Jacaranda cuspidfolia, the maroon jacaranda or Jacaranda jasminoides and the white champak, also known as Michaelia champaca. The trumpet tree or pink poui tree, also known as Tabebuia rosea, grows to a height of 40 feet or taller.
