Five Relaxing Day Trips from Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta, Day Trips, Georgia

Atlanta offers an abundance of unique activities and things to do, but it’s also an ideal hub for day trips to surrounding areas. Using Atlanta as a home base for travels, here are some ideal getaways within two hours of the city.

Helen, Georgia: A Bavarian Village in the Georgia Mountains

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Helen is an absolute must-see. The Bavarian town comes complete with cobblestones and alpine architecture, and you’ll think you’re sight-seeing in Europe. Rent tubes and drift down the Chattahoochee River, take a carriage ride, or grab lunch in the Troll Tavern overlooking the water. You won’t want to miss the many shops selling homemade taffy, crafts, and Bavarian chocolate. While it’s an ideal day trip, Helen’s quaint and relaxing atmosphere is hard to leave behind, and you might consider an overnight stay at the Castle Inn in the heart of the town.

Callaway Gardens: A Family Getaway with Something for Everyone

Pine Mountain is home to Callaway Gardens, a combination golf course, resort, park, and nature preserve offering something for everyone. The park boasts a white sand beach with paddle boats, water slide, and ski lessons. The “Flying High Circus,” golf, and butterfly garden are good non-water options. Many shows and attractions are seasonal and have varying rates, so check their website for current availability. There’s an old-fashioned malt shop and pizzeria near the beach, but Callaway’s many hotels and lodges feature unique restaurants. The Piedmont at the Lodge offers lakeside breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, though reservations are recommended.

Madison, Georgia: The Antebellum Town Too Beautiful to Burn

Known as “The Town Sherman Refused to Burn” on his Civil War march to the sea, Madison is a sleepy, antebellum hideaway full of history and picturesque sights. The town’s main (only) intersection of Washington and Main streets is the center of all the action. Grab lunch at Adrian’s Place, which serves up hearty portions of classic Southern fare, then drop by Antique Sweets for a mouthwatering homemade confection. There’s something exciting and family-friendly going on almost every week, so check out their calendar of events. Tours are a popular option any time of year, and historic Heritage Hall museum is a must-see.

Dahlonega, Georgia: The Gold Rush Town in the North Georgia Mountains

The site of the 1828 gold rush, Dahlonega is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is a popular hub for vacationers, with cabins, wineries, hiking, and beautiful mountain views. Day trippers will want to focus on the old town square, which combines historical charm with an extra helping of character. The Glassblowing Shop, located on the square, offers daily demonstrations by a 4th generation glass blower. The Fudge Factory offers special “Dahlonega Nuggets” and other Southern confections. If you don’t have time to tour the vineyards, Habersham Winery has a tasting room on the square. Want to feel young again? Take a stroll down Hawkins Street two blocks from the square; it’s on the National Registry of Historic Places and most buildings date to the 1800s. The square is replete with flavorful local eateries, and if you have time and feel like a drive, you can even tour a mine and pan for gold yourself.
