Five Optimistic News Stories of 2007

Hollywood, News Stories

We all want and need to be informed about what’s going on in the world, but the barrage of mostly negative things we see on television and read in the newspapers can be extremely depressing. Most of what we are offered, in terms of news, focuses on the worst possible events things that make us more frightened and pessimistic and overwhelms us with outlooks that are sarcastic and hopeless..

Despite what you heard in 2007, however, there was some good news.

Honesty Still Exists

A 53-year-old St. Petersburg, Florida woman who works for the county garbage department found a plastic bag. Not a big deal, except consider the fact that this bag contained $65,000 in $50 and $100 bills. Debbie Cole wasn’t tempted in the least to keep the stash for herself, but turned it in. It was discovered that the bundle had fallen from an armored truck.

Although she got no reward, because she’s employed by the government, it didn’t seem to bother her at all. She was satisfied with just doing the right thing.

The Unsung Side of Hollywood

With TMZ.com and other entertainment sites only reporting the worst side of Hollywood, it’s easy to assume that celebs are all self-absorbed and heartless.

Not so.

The news shows failed to report that a number of “stars,” such as Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, Kirk Douglas and others spent their Thanksgiving serving meals to homeless folks on Skid Row. They could very well have been sitting in the comfort of their opulent houses, being waited on, but they chose to mark the holiday by helping others.

New Hope for Skin Cancer Patients

On the health front, a new drug- STA-4783- has doctors hopeful that it will be an effective treatment for skin cancer. The drug may be capable of causing tumor cells to shrink in size by “attacking” them with oxygen. Unlike current treatments, STA-4783 does not affect healthy cells and has few side-effects. Doctors hope that the drug can be used to treat other kinds of cancers, as well.

It is still under study, but STA-4783 looks very promising for the future.

Go, Boomers!

It’s never too late to realize a dream. 59-year-old Mike Flynt was haunted by regret for being tossed off his college football team years before. Egged on by friends, Flynt, still in top physical shape, actually decided to go back to Su Ross State College in West Texas and try out for the football team.

Surprising many, he made it, giving credibility to the old saying: “You’re only as young as you feel.

Good Things Come in Small Packages

Few creatures are as loyal as dogs. They give us love, companionship and sometimes much more.

When tiny Chihuahua Zoey saw a rattlesnake going for little Booker West, she mustered up as much courage as a dog 10 times her size. The brave canine threw herself in front of the 1-year-old, taking the bites meant for him.

It was touch-and-go for awhile for Zoey, as she was injured seriously by the rattler, but things are just fine now.
