Five Fun Fall Leaf Crafts for Preschoolers

One of the first and most recognizable signs that fall has begun is that the leaves on many different types of trees begin to turn from green to shades of orange, red, yellow and brown. Natures amazing fall color show is truly a sight to behold. You can capture some of the beauty of the changing leaves with one of these five fun and easy fall leaf craft projects that kids of all ages will enjoy making.

How to Make Five Fun Fall Leaf Crafts

Blot Paint Leaf
This cute fall art project uses paint and construction paper leaves to make a colorful addition to a classroom bulletin board about fall.

Materials Needed
Large sheets of red, yellow, brown and orange construction paper
Red, yellow, brown and orange liquid tempera paint
Paint containers
Scissors
Pencil
Large leaf template
Plastic table covering
Popsicle sticks

Directions

1. To begin place the leaf template on a sheet of construction paper and trace around it using a pencil.

2. Use the scissors to cut out the leaf shape. To make several leaves stack four sheets of construction paper and then cut out.

3. Cover the work space with the plastic table covering.

4. Fill the paint containers with liquid tempera paint and put a Popsicle stick in each container.

5. Fold the leaf shape in half.

6. Open the leaf shape up.

7. Use the Popsicle sticks to put several blobs of paint on one side of the leaf.

8. Fold the leave shape again.

9. Use your hand to gently rub over the entire leave half.

10. Open the leaf and allow to dry.

11. Display on a Bulletin board in a window or hanging from the ceiling.

Fall Leaves Door Wreath
This cute fall leaves craft uses real fall leaves to make a cute wreath to hang on a door or in a window. If you don’t live in an area that has many fall leaves you can use red, orange, yellow and brown construction paper leaves instead.

Materials Needed
Several multi colored fall leaves or construction paper cut outs of leaves
Paper plate
Plastic container
Paint brushes
Scissors
Hole punch
Yarn
Glue
Plastic table covering

Directions

1. Cover the workspace you will be using with the plastic table covering.

2. Fold the paper plate in half and cut a circle out of the middle to make a wreath shape.

3. Punch two holes close together at the top of the wreath.

4. Thread a piece of yarn through the two holes and tie a knot to make a loop for hanging.

5. Pour or squeeze the glue into a plastic container.

6. Use the paint brush to apply the glue to the front side of the paper plate.

7. Cover the entire paper plate with fall leaves overlapping if needed.

8. Allow to dry.

9. Hang on a door or in a window to welcome fall to your home or school.

Stained Glass Leaf
This beautiful fall leaf craft will look great hanging in a window where the suns rays will shine through it creating a great fall look to your home or classroom.

Materials Needed
Clear contact paper
Red, yellow, orange, brown and green tissue paper
Scissors
Hole punch
Yarn
Marker

Directions

1. Cut tissue paper into several small pieces.

2. Cut a large rectangle of clear contact paper from the roll.

3. Peel back half of the backing of the contact paper exposing the sticky side.

4. Place several different colored pieces of tissue paper on the sticky side of the contact paper.

5. Peel off the other half of the contact paper and fold over the side with the tissue paper on it to seal them inside.

6. Rub all over the piece of contact paper to get out any trapped air bubbles.

7. Draw a leaf shape on the tissue filled contact paper.

8. Cut out the leaf shape.

9. Punch a hole in the stem of the leaf.

10. Thread a piece of yarn through the hole and make a loop for hanging.

Fall Leaves Necklace
Celebrate the colors of fall with this colorful necklace made of leaves that preschoolers will enjoy wearing. Its fun to make and improves their fine motor skills.

Materials Needed
Red, orange, yellow and brown construction paper
Curling ribbon
Scissors
Hole punch
Uncooked Rigatoni
Pencil
Leaf template

Directions

1. Cut several small leaves out of construction paper.

2. Punch a hole in each leaf.

3. Cut a piece of curling ribbon long enough to easily go over a child’s head when tied.

4. Give child several leaves and pieces of uncooked rigatoni.

5. Use masking tape to tape one end of the curling ribbon on the table. This will help keep everything from sliding off as the children are stringing their necklace.

6. Show children how to space their leaves by placing a piece of rigatoni between each one.

7. String leaves and rigatoni.

8. Remove the masking tape and knot the ends of the curling ribbon together.

9. Let children wear their necklaces home.

Spray Paint Leaf Prints
This is a fun fall craft project that looks great when displayed on a bulletin board as part of a Welcome Fall display.

Materials Needed
Black construction paper
Several poster board cut outs of leaves
Masking tape
Plastic table covering
Empty plastic spray bottles
Liquid soap
Red, yellow and orange liquid tempera paint

Directions

1. Cover work area with the plastic table covering.

2. Fill spray bottles with liquid tempera that has been thinned with liquid soap.

3. Use masking tape to stick several leaf cut outs on a large sheet of black construction paper.

4. Let children spray paint all over the black construction paper. Encourage them to use a variety of fall colors.

5. Allow to dry.

6. Remove poster board leaves.

7. Display or send home.

Tips:

Always have children wear old t shirts or paint smocks when making a craft project that requires using paint.

If using liquid tempera paint a little liquid soap added to the paint well make it easier to wash out if some should get on a child’s clothes.

To make liquid tempera last longer try adding a little liquid starch.
