Five Free Things to Do in New Hampshire

Free Gift Cards, Free Things

This year, my summer vacation was a little tighter than usual. The wallet was lighter and the credit cards have long been thrown away. I found out this year that you can find fun things to do in New Hampshire for free. Sure, it may take a little searching. It seems today that each White Mountain vista has a hand in my pocket. But this year we had no choice. It was time for my family and I to buckle down and be as cheap as possible. Sorry kids, no water parks this year. Luckily, we were still able to find at least five free things to do in New Hampshire. And they were just as fun and exciting as the activities that cost money.

1. Franconia Notch

Along Interstate 93 in New Hampshire is Franconia Notch. Along this stretch of road, you will find many scenic areas. This includes “The Basin” and “Old Man On The Mountain” tribute area. These areas are among the few free destinations along Franconia Notch. Although there are a few expensive activities along the Notch as well, including Flume Gorge, beautiful natural sights like “The Basin” are just as wonderful. I suggest taking a day trip down Franconia Notch. Start at Route 302, just past Bretton Woods. Take the scenic Route three South. Swinging your car through the valley with the lush forest and mountain skyline around you is an incredible view to behold. Stop at the free areas as you go down Interstate 93. You can get off at exit 32, which will bring you into Lincoln. And Lincoln is the start of another free activity that you can do in New Hampshire.

2. Kancamagus Highway

The 34 mile stretch of rte 112 that starts in Lincoln is referred to as The Kancamagus Highway. Nicknamed “The Kanc” by locals, the scenic byway connects Lincoln to the town of Conway. The nice one hour drive comes complete with plenty of scenic outlooks and opportunities for family pictures. The ranger station states that there is a parking fee for all signed areas. However, there is parking on the side of the road as well. I have never received a ticket for parking in an unsigned area. If you do park on the side of the road, just be cautious. It’s a fairly busy road.

3. Movies At Settlers Green Outlet Village

Settlers Corner is a large shopping area in downtown North Conway. Also called Settlers Green Outlet Village, it’s a collection of 60 outlets stores. Stores include Nike, Aeropostale, Adidas and Coach. Every Tuesday night during the summer, Settlers Green sets up a large outdoor projection screen. At dusk, they start playing a rated G or PG movie. Families and friends gather on the main lawn and watch the big screen. Kids are allowed to play in the surrounding area, and it’s a very relaxing, laid back atmosphere. They also have drawing for free gift cards, and sports paraphernalia. The movies at Settlers Green Outlet Village is an easy fun night out for all. And it’s completely free.

4. Swimming Holes

The best part of each vacation my family and I take are our visits to the swimming holes. The great White Mountains National Forest is littered with these pristine spots. Snow melt from the surrounding mountains trickle into giant pools of cold water. Many of these swimming holes are surrounded by rocks and trees. Locals have been known to tie ropes to trees and swing into the water. Although you may find information on swimming holes by perusing the newspaper, you might be better off asking a local store clerk. They will give you the best directions to clean and free swimming holes. Bring your swim tubes!

5. Day Hikes

New Hampshire is famous for their thousands upon thousands of hiking trails. It’s very intimidating. However, hiking can be very easily. Skip the hardcore hikes that take several hours. Especially if you have young children. Instead, do some research on the internet before you go on vacation. You will find several hiking trails that are easy, short, and still offer spectacular views. Couple your short hikes with a nearby swimming hole and a picnic. This will give you a whole days worth of fun and excitement, for absolutely nothing. I suggest trying Cathedral Ledge. The view is breathtaking.

The above list is merely five of the free things you can do in New Hampshire. There are several more, but it takes time and research. Use your imagination. Typically, its the simplest things that can be turned into fun and excitement.
