Finding the Best Gift for Your Boss

Boss Day, Buyers Guide

National Boss’s Day falls in October every year and then Christmas comes very soon after. If you are the one designated to select the gift for the boss, how do you find one that the boss will enjoy and the other staff members will be satisfied with? Here are a couple of ideas to help you when selecting that all important gift.

If this is the first time you have given a gift to a boss, you might want to check with your Human Resources Department and see what the guidelines are on gifts to supervisors. Some corporations frown on this as it can lead to dissention among other employees. If HR gives you the go-ahead, some detective work will help you select the perfect gift for your boss.

If your office is one of those that has several office potlucks or birthday celebrations throughout the year and someone remembered to take pictures, consider creating a memory book or photo album for the boss. Everyone enjoys remembering the funny and silly stuff; but don’t forget to add photos of promotion ceremonies, baby showers, or copies of customer service awards. In some instances, it may be appropriate to add photos of off-site locations where business meeting took place and the people who attended the business meeting with the boss. Things such as airline ticket stuffs, restaurant receipts, and hotel cards can bring back memories of the business trip long after the team has moved on. Be creative, your boss will enjoy the trip down memory lane, even if he does not say so.

For a more personal note, consider hobby related gifts. What does your boss enjoy doing in his spare time? If he loves to bet on the ponies, consider a gift book of famous race tracks or a gift subscription to a horse racing magazine. You may even want to consider getting a framed photo of a winning horse for a particular race the boss attended. Check on-line sellers such as Craig’s List and eBay for this type of thing.

If hiking, camping of fishing is their thing, check out the local camping supply store for great gift ideas. If you are stuck, the sales associate can show you the latest light-weight tool for hikers, the best selling fishing lure or a portable GPS device, each one sure to be a hit with any outdoors person. Camping supply stores have great discounts in the fall and they can tell you which items were best sellers last summer.

When the boss is a proud family man or woman, consider gifts that the whole family can use. Picture frames, gift certificates, family game sets, family movie packages, and food baskets show the boss you understand how important the family is to him.

There are of course the standard office humor gifts such as a clock that runs backwards, stress release balls, perpetual motion desk toys, dart boards with silly pictures, wastebasket-mounted basketball hoops and golf related table top tee sets. No matter what gift you chose for your boss, consider the person you are buying for when you select the gift. A gift based on the receiver’s personality and hobbies is a gift that will be appreciated and remembered.
