FedEx Vs. USPS Shipping Options

Fedex, United States Postal Service

Anywhere between 20-30 orders are processed daily by our online distributor; meaning 20-30 packages are being shipped. The question that I am constantly asked is “Which method of shipping is better?” Cost is just one of the factors in answering this question, but apparently to most individuals it is also the most important. What other factors are involved in choosing between shipping FedEx or United States Postal Service? See for yourself.

If the package is less than 13oz, you can most definitely consider shipping via United States Postal Service First Class mail. It is by far the cheapest shipping method for a small package going anywhere in the United States; even a few stamps may suffice. USPS also offers flat rate boxes that simply mean if it can fit in the box, regardless of the weight, you will be charged the flat rate for that particular sized box. The problem I experience with this though is that unless it is going across the country, or is abnormally heavy for its size, these rates are not all that great. In fact, even the largest flat rate box is a mere 12″ x 12″. As mentioned before, it depends on what you are s hipping, but I typically only use flat rate if I am shipping internationally. I will note that Priority mail, which is equivalent to FedEx Express services, has quicker transit times and a more affordable service. Before moving on to FedEx, I acknowledge one last complaint against USPS regarding their tracking service. Any packages that do not arrive in more than 7 days were probably lost in transit. Online tracking will only show the move from point A to B and whether it was delivered or not. Further details are unknown unless you contact the respective Post Office and request information.

FedEx on the other hand, may be more expensive but is also more reliable. A FedEx tracking number will show details as it transits through each shipping center and even a signature proof of delivery if someone is present at time of delivery. Damages or exceptions can also be viewed online. Even the cost comparison is debatable. If you are a small business owner, check with you FedEx small packages representative for discounts, etc. These will significantly decrease the price for any Ground or Express packages. Transit times are comfortable even with the slowest service, Ground, but may be expedited for a hefty fee.

As much as I would love to support our government and ship USPS, they are unable to provide the tools and resources expected by a customer. I will admit that it is not likely your package will get lost or damaged if you ship 1 package a day. However, increase that number to shipping 20-30 and I guarantee you will notice problems. I do not deny that FedEx will prove to be perfect either, but you can rely on a returned package or a notice while tracking the package. To conclude, most customers choose the least expensive route and I do not blame them. However, when their package is the one lost in the mail, it becomes tiresome trying to locate it and even file a claim. Save money in the long run, Ship FedEx.
