Father’s Day Craft Project: Watch Box Kids Can Make for Dad

This is a fun Father’s Day craft project kids can make for Dad to hold his watches in this year. Kids of all ages should easily be able to make this simple homemade Father’s Day gift.

This Father’s Day craft project is simply and should cost you $20 or less per child. The most expensive part is the wooden box. You can buy pre made wooden boxes at any arts and craft store, like Michaels. You can not use a shoe box for this project. As the decoupage medium dries it will shrink and warp the shoe box.

For this Father’s Day Watch Box Craft Project You Will Need:

Tissue Paper Decoupage Medium

Wooden Box ( about 8X10 inches big, at least 4 inches tall)

2″ Paint Brush

Scissors

Pencil

Felt

Glue

PVC Pipe, Wood 1X2, or Card Board Tube

The first step is to cut out some letters from the tissue paper. I recommend “Happy Father’s Day,” “Best Dad,” and any words that remind them of their own Dad.

Cut them out with scissors or pinking sheers for a neat edge.

You will need a lot of these, maybe 20 or so for a small to medium sized box.

Use one of those ready made wooden boxes you can buy at any craft store for the base of this project. You could prime or paint the box first if you would like. Just remember the color will show through the Father’s Day words cut out of tissue paper, so stick with lighter colors.

Start by laying a letter on the wood box and using decoupage to attach it to the box. Dip your brush in the decoupage medium and then brush on the letter.

You may want to paint on a layer of decoupage medium to the box and then lay the letter on. You can add more medium on top. Use more decoupage medium to hold this down if necessary.

Continue this process until you cover the entire wooden box watch box with Father’s Day related words. Your letters can and should overlap, creating a layered look on the craft box. You can add as many layers of father’s day words as you would like. The decoupage glue medium will dry clear and hard. You children’s artwork will be well protected for years to come.

To antique your Father’s Day watch box craft box you can rub a wood gel stain onto the dried box. Wipe it off with a clean dry cloth. Allow this to dry for at lest an hour.

For a shiny touch try mixing one part bronze paint with two parts glaze. Brush this over the entire box. Wipe away any excess if necessary. Allow this to dry before you move on to the next step of this craft project.

To complete the Father’s Day watch box you need to line the inside of the box with felt. This will protect your Dad’s watches.

Start by cutting a piece of fabric out to fit the bottom of the box. Glue it into place. Next, cut out pieces to line the inside of the inside of the box. Glue them into place as well.

Now, take your piece of 1X2 board and cut it to fit inside of the box. It should be almost as long as the inside of the box. Wrap this in felt as well.

You can make 2 of these if there is room.

This will be the watch holder inside of the box that lets Dad line his watches face up.

In place of the wood you could also use a sturdy card board tube or even PVC piping. The home improvement store sells all of these materials and they are more than happy to cut it to length for you!
