Hair is a part of everyone’s body that is, in most cases, cut off as often as possible. Hair is the one part of the body that many people spend a lot of money to have cut off and needlessly discarded. People feel a haircut is a means of personal expression as if the useless dead strands are personality extensions. People who are able to grow their hair feel hair styles are a way to be noticed by others. To people who are unable to grow hair, such as chemotherapy patients, the need for a full head of hair to fit into societies standards and remain excepted is of utmost importance. When a child is stricken with a life threatening disease all they want is to look like other kids around them – from the clothes on their back to the hair on their head. The appearance of a child is of supreme importance in their mind.
The average person is unable to stop the natural progression of cancer or the devastating aftermath. However, everyone possesses the ability to help, and that help grows in an abundantly free supply on the top of most everyone’s head. Donating hair that will go towards the creation of a wig and then given to a victim of cancer is a means for every person to share a piece of their heart and soul with a someone who is truly in need of love.
Three charities (Beautiful Lengths; Locks of Love; and Wigs for Kids) are truly elite in regards to converting donated hair into beautiful durable wigs for people who suffer from hair loss as a result of cancer treatment. The hair donation length requirements and guidelines are similar for all three charities.
Hair Donation Length Requirements:
– Minimum length of 8 inches. (Beautiful Lengths)
– Minimum length of 10 inches. (Locks of Love)
– Minimum length of 12 inches. (Wigs for Kids)
Hair Donation Guidelines: (Same for Beautiful Lengths; Locks of Love; and Wigs for Kids)
– Yes – Wavy and curly is accepted.
– Yes – May have been treated with temporary, or semi-permanent dyes.
– No – May not have been bleached, permanently colored, or chemically altered.
– Must be freshly washed and completely dry without any styling products at the time of cutting.
– Pull into a tightly bound ponytail with an elastic band on each end and cut. (Additional elastic bands may be used – it is of the utmost importance that the hair is received in a tightly bound ponytail.)
– Seal within a zipper-lock bag, and place in a padded envelope for shipping.
