Easy and Unique Mother’s Day Crafts for Kids & Toddlers

Mother's Day crafts, Mother's Day Crafts for Preschoolers, Room Decoration

Regardless of the age, all kids should make Mother’s Day gifts for their mothers. While it’s easy for Dad to give them a couple of bucks so that something can be purchased, a more meaningful gift for Mom is one that has been crafted with lots of love.

Over the years, I’ve made lots of gifts for my mother, and now, my kids are making gifts for me. Need an easy Mother Day’s craft for your classroom or child? Read on to learn four easy crafts that are fun for kids (and dads) of all ages.

“Love” soap Mother’s Day craft

The Dove soap company sells nicely shaped soaps with the caption “Dove” imprinted on the bar itself. With a dull butter (or even a plastic) knife, a child can carve away the upper arc of the “D” to form the letter “L”, turning it from Dove soap into a bar that reads “Love.”

As kids, we’d make several “Love” soap bars for Mother’s Day and wrapped them individually with tissue paper.

Dads can help by showing the child how to carve away the “D” of the bar. Older kids might even wish to carve tiny flowers around the word “love” using the tip of a toothpick.

“Love and Kisses” garland craft for mom

For a whimsical room decoration that’s easy enough for toddlers, making “Love and Kisses” garland for Mother’s Day is a fun way to decorate the house.

Supplies needed are sheets of colorful construction or craft paper, a scissors, hole punch, crayons or markers, and a long eight foot length of colored ribbon.

Step 1 Begin by cutting out several dozen hearts in assorted sizes. After cutting out the hearts, use the hole punch to punch out two holes at the top of the heart for threading.

Step 2
Have your children decorate the hearts, including such phrases as “I love you, Mom,” or “Happy Mother’s Day,” “Love & Kisses” and so on.

Step 3 Carefully thread the hearts onto the ribbon so that the written sentiments are all facing the same direction.

Step 4 Hang the garland somewhere where Mom can see it on Mother’s Day.

“I Love Mom” flower bouquet

With this unusual craft, the kids become part of a Mother’s Day flower bouquet.

Supplies needed include a decorative flower pot (check the thrift stores!), a styrofoam ball that fits snugly inside the pot, some Spanish moss, pipe cleaners, colored paper in assorted colors, and some pictures of the kids cut into two inch round circles.

Step 1 Have your child cut out an assortment of two to three inch flowers from the card stock, including some mod daisies with two inch centers. (A parent may need to offer some direction and help here.) The flowers can be a mix of styles and can even be layered.

Step 2 Glue the child’s photograph inside the daisy. Write “I love you, Mom!” or “Happy Mother’s Day!” on at least one or two other flowers.

Step 3 Attach a pipe cleaner “stem” to the back of each flower. After making the flowers, your child can make a dozen “leaves” by wrapping a pipe cleaner tightly around a pencil, gently removing the coil, and then stretching it out the pipe cleaner until it’s 6″ to 8″ in length.

Step 4 Place the styrofoam ball inside the pot, and poke some holes in the top using a narrow chopstick or skewer. The holes should be at least three to four inches deep to support the weight of the flowers.

Step 5 Insert the end of the pipe cleaner stems and leaves into the holes.

Step 6 Cover the styrofoam ball with Spanish Moss.

“I Love Mom” parade banner

Have your kids announce their love to Mom with a colorful parade banner.

Supplies for this easy craft include a roll of three to four inch wide decorative ribbon, a wooden dowel, stapler, and some felt markers. (You may have to buy more ribbon and dowels if making more than one parade banner.)

Step 1 Unroll the ribbon to it’s full length. Have the kids decorate one side of the ribbon with their markers. They should include some Mother Day sentiments as well, such as “I love you, Mom”, “Happy Mother’s Day,” or “You’re the best!.

Step 2 Staple one edge of the ribbon to the dowel.

Step 3 Have the kids march around the house or yard, waving the banner in the air and twirling it around while shouting “Happy Mother’s Day!”
