Earth Day Activity for Kids #1: Recycle Broken Crayon Pieces

Preheat oven to 400* and grease an old muffin pan. Have a child remove the paper off all the blue and green crayon pieces and place the pieces in the muffin circles, the blue and green crayon pieces mixed together will look similar to the Earth. The muffin pans should be placed in the oven until melted and then removed and cooled until hardened. This Earth Day activity for kids is great because it is a fun way to make crayons and also a super way to learn about recycling.

Earth Day Activity for Kids #2: Show How Plants Drink Water

Fill a glass with water and add a bright color of food coloring, place a long stemmed white carnation in the colored glass of water and each day watch as the white carnation changes to the same color as the food coloring. Celery also works well with this demonstration. Children can see that plants drink water and where the water goes, this is a favorite Earth Day activity for kids.

Earth Day Activity for Kids #3: Leaf Collection and Identification

This fun Earth Day project is lots of fun and easy to do. First, go on a nature walk and children can collect numerous leaves, when collection is complete kids can identify each leaf using a leaf identification book from the library or bookstore. Kids can then place the leaves in between two sheets of contact paper and adhere leaves into some type of journal and label leaves. This leaf book will last for an extended period of time and can be referred back to often for information and/or to add more leaves.

Earth Day Activity for Kids #4: Feed the Birds

Here you will find an exciting Earth Day activity that helps animals, specifically birds. Find or purchase a large pinecone and tie a heavy duty piece of string securely around the top of the pinecone. Cover the pinecone in peanut butter and generously sprinkle birdseed all over the peanut butter so that it is completely covered. Hang the homemade bird feeder on a tree near a window and watch the birds come to feast.

Earth Day Activity for Kids #5: Clean the Park

There are many organized events in towns and cities for clean up activities on Earth Day, but if one is not offered in your town or city, clean up can be done on a smaller scale. Simply take a disposable bag and wear protective gloves to pick up a few garbage items from the local park that have been disposed of on the grass or walkways. A huge clean up is not necessary, a little help goes a long way and the idea is to show kids that keeping public areas clean is everyone’s business.
