Dvd Releases, Girls Night In

October 2010 is an exciting month for DVD releases. Whether you’re looking for something to watch with your kids or a scary movie for Halloween, there’s a new movie being released on DVD this October to suit you.

Here’s your guide to movies being released on DVD (and most on Blu-ray as well) for the first time this autumn.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street”

If you are looking for a movie to rent or buy for Halloween this year, then look no further. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” comes out on DVD this month. This is a remake of the classic horror film, and Freddy is back in a major way. It is just as over-the-top as we expect Elm Street to be, and perfect for your Halloween horror.

“How To Train Your Dragon”

Although I had low expectations when I walked into the theater to see “How To Train Your Dragon” with my kids, my kids and I absolutely loved it. Based on the popular children’s book by Cressida Cowell, “How To Train Your Dragon” is about a viking boy who is taught to hate and kill dragons. However, he forms an accidental friendship with a dragon, and his ideas about life begin to change. This is a really sweet story with a good message, but it manages never to be cheesy because there is so much humor and action in it as well. Although I saw it in 3D, I’m just as excited to watch it again with my kids at home.

“Sex and the City 2”

A movie selection wouldn’t be complete without a chick flick. The newest instalment of the hugely hyped “Sex and the City” franchise is released on DVD this month. If you haven’t followed the series before, then this isn’t a good place to start. If you love SATC though, then plan a girls’ night in and follow Carrie and company’s latest adventures.

“Karate Kid”

The original “Karate Kid”, even though its merits are debatable, is a classic movie from when I was growing up. Pretty much everybody in my generation has seen it. Amazingly, the new “the Karate Kid” movie manages to beat the original. It stay s true to the concept, but also updates (and in my opinion improves) it. Jaden Smith (son of superstar Will Smith) and Jackie Chan star. I can’t imagine anyone in the role other than Jackie Chan. This is one not to miss.

Other films released in October 2010 include “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “Splice”.
