Double Day Book Club

Free Books

You have heard of these book clubs, CD clubs, and movie clubs right? Well I’m going to depth on each in separate articles, so I’m going to start with Double Day Book Club. For those of you who don’t know what a book club is it is basically a club that gives you free books to join then you enter into a commitment, that varies from club to club, and then they send you stuff every month, and you get books at a discounted rate.

The first step to joining Double Day Book Club is to pick out your ‘free’ books. You can do this online at http://www.doubledaybookclub.com or if you get a flyer in a magazine or in the mail. You can pick most of their books in your free selection books. You pick 5 books for $0.99 and then you get a free book. Then you can also get a book for $5.99 that will count towards your membership total. Plus you must pay for shipping and handling. So with out your $5.99 book, that brings you up to about $13.99 total.

Now you are thinking, what are your membership conditions? Well you are agreeing to buy 4 more club books, at regular club price, in the next two years. Sounds simple right? But it this really worth it? You can’t cancel until you have bought your 4 books and there are many aspects of this club you don’t see until you have joined. I’m going to reveal them to you now.

Once you join, you will start receiving a member news letter in the mail once every 3 weeks. In this news letter there is a form that you have to fill out saying I want these books, or no I don’t want my directors’ selections. You can also reply online, but if you happen to forget they will send you the director selections and the bill for them, that usually totals about $35. Now if you don’t open the package, you can write return to sender on it and they will return the books back and then Double Day will credit your account.

Now when you open this member news letter there is a lot to look at. There are DVD’s and gifts and many, many other things too. But the only things that counts toward your membership are the books in their main selections.

Now don’t get me wrong Double Day has its advantages too. You will be able to get the newest books from you favorite authors before anybody else, and at a discounted price. They have 100’s of books to choose from. Anything from romance, to horror and suspense, to adventure and action. They have Biographies and children’s books. They also have Christian books, cook books, health mind and body, holiday and gift ideas, to reference books too.

Now once you have completed you membership conditions you call to cancel your membership. Of course they don’t want to lose you, but you are annoyed of the monthly having to cancel your directors’ selections. Then you finally think you are done, and the operator says, “Well why don’t we just switch you over to a no response membership?” You are about to say no when she says, “All that is, is where you still get our member news letters, but you don’t have to send in your director’s choice cards, and there is never another obligation.” So you agree and get off the phone, but after a few months you want to have the newsletters stopped entirely so you call back, and it takes you 15 to 20 minutes to get your point across. If you are like me, then that just sealed the deal that you won’t ever join Double Day Book Club again and that you won’t recommend it to your friends either!
