Dookie, Green Day: ’90s Album Review

Punk Music, Vallejo

One of my favorite ’90s albums has got to be Green Day’s Dookie. Despite the odd name, it was a definite hit that went on to make Green Day one of the world’s premier rock bands. The name came about from the band suffering diarrhea while touring the country doing concerts. The first thought of the name Liquid Dookie but that was scratched since people might think of that being too gross but being gross was what Green Day was best at.

The album was irreverent. It was in your face and it changed the face of punk music forever. A lot of the bands that you hear today have in one way or another been influenced by Green Day. The album became known for several well known songs such as “When I Come Around” and “Basket Case.” These two songs received heavy play on the radio and soon became smash hits. Dookie eventually went on win a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. One thing to note is that the band did receive criticism when they signed to Reprise Records before recording their album Dookie.

After so many years, it’s amazing to still see that the band is still relevant for its time. From the early stages of teen angst to the mature material covering politics, Green Day as always stayed true to its voice and its presentation. Who would have ever thought that the young band from Vallejo, California would make it this far selling 60 million records with an album called Dookie putting them on the map.
