DIY Fingerless Gloves

Diy Fashion

Fingerless gloves are often considered a fashion statement for trendy dressers. They tend to be popular in the fall, when it is a bit chillier but not cold enough to warrant wool mittens. A fancy pair of fingerless gloves makes for a great accessory, and a plain pair of fingerless gloves can be used to draw attention to a beautiful ring on your hand or a perfect manicure. And believe it or not, fingerless gloves are also extremely useful for people in pep bands or marching bands, since they allow you to keep your hands warm but leave your fingers free for playing your instrument. Since fingerless gloves are considered a unique fashion statement by many, they tend to be on the pricier side in several stores. Fortunately, creating your own pair of fingerless gloves is an easy and inexpensive DIY project.

Materials:

-Two t-shirt sleeves salvaged from torn or worn out shirts, or shirts you or a loved one never wears. This is a good way to use those free and ugly t-shirts you get as promotions without letting them sit and gather dust in the back of your dresser or closet. Creating fingerless gloves is one of many DIY projects that involve using cut-up pieces of old t-shirts, so if you are familiar with DIY fashion projects you may already have salvaged old clothes and have leftover pieces that are ready to use.

-A sturdy piece of white chalk

-Scissors-ideally fabric scissors or at least a pair that is not super dull

-Sewing machine or sewing kit

-Measuring tape

1. Use your measuring tape to measure four inches down from the top of the shirt sleeve. Mark the four inch mark with your chalk. Then, using the chalk, draw a line starting at the chalk mark and stretching horizontally across the t-shirt sleeve (or perpendicular to the way you measured with the measuring tape)

2. Carefully cut along the chalk line that you just marked. Do this slowly, or you may end up with several jagged edges on each half of the shirt sleeve.

3. Now place the measuring tape along the chalk line where you just cut the sleeve in half. Using your chalk again, make a small mark at 2 inches and another at 4 inches. Repeat this process on the other half of the sleeve

4. Fold over the right side of the sleeve and straight stitch the first two inches to inches 4-6.and leave the area between inches 2 and 4 open. This open space will be the thumbhole of your fingerless glove. Repeat this again for the other sleeve half.

5. After stitching both fingerless gloves, turn them right side out so that the stitches don’t show.

6. If you desire, you can use buttons, felt cut-outs, sequins, rhinestones, ribbons or other DIY project materials to decorate and personalize your fingerless gloves. If you intend to use your fingerless gloves to draw attention to jewelry or a manicure, you are better off leaving them alone and not applying anything else to them.

7. If you prefer to use other, higher quality materials instead of old cotton t-shirts to make your fingerless gloves, all you need to do is carefully cut out two rectangular pieces of cloth between 8 and 12 inches wide and about 4-5 inches long and then follow steps 3-6.

This DIY project is also a great way to make a unique and personalized gift for a friend or family member. If you are a babysitter, nanny or parent, you can also use a child’s old t-shirt and teach her to create these DIY fingerless gloves.
