Diaper Cake Instructions

Diaper Cakes

As I walked into a baby shower for my niece, the first thing I saw was a beautiful tiered cake sitting in the middle of the gift table. I was confused because it looked like a wedding cake and I thought I was in the wrong location. As I got closer, the cake was made of disposable diapers held together with two and three inch wide ribbon. The diaper cake was so beautiful that it was a shame to take it apart, even though it was meant to be.

The five layer diaper cake picture with this article was made with 96 newborn disposable diapers. Any size diaper cake is possible. Follow these simple instructions to make your own disposable diaper cake.

Material Required:

Disposable newborn diapers
Rubber bands
Tier cake plates and stands
2-inch wide ribbon
3-inch wide ribbon
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Adornments

Instructions:

Step 1 – Roll each diaper into a coil. Secure the middle of each diaper coil with a rubber band. Set aside until needed.

Step 2 – Place the largest cake plate on a flat surface. Stand a rolled diaper on end. Position the rolled diaper in the center of the cake plate. Continue to stand the rolled diapers on end and place them around the middle diaper. Repeat the process until the diapers fill the cake plate.

Step 3 – Wrap the outer edge of the rolled diaper cake with 2- or 3-inch wide ribbon. Cut the ribbon so it overlaps itself by 1 inch. Pull the ribbon tight and hot glue the overlapped edge.

Step 4 – Follow the above instructions to create additional layers.

Step 5 – Adorn the edges of each diaper cake layer with ribbons, lace, flowers, butterflies and so on. Hot glue the adornments to the 2- or 3-inch wide ribbon.

Step 6 – Assemble the cake using pillars if desired. Place a topper on the top diaper cake layer. Topper ideas include stuffed animals, baby doll, miniature cradle and so on.

Tips: It is helpful to have a helper when constructing large diaper cake layers. The diapers do not always cooperate and stay standing. A set of extra hands is definitely a welcome addition during the construction process.
