Dermalogica Clean Start for Teens

Dermalogica, Lip Treatment

Teenagers need a simple yet effective routine to treat their ever-changing skin. The Clean Start line is Dermalogica’s response to teen skin issues. Designed to address oiliness and blemishes, Clean Start teaches the importance of maintaining skin health at an early age.

Clean Start takes a 3-step approach. The first step is “getting clean.” How does one get clean? You start with ‘Wash Off’…a cleanser with salicylic acid that cleans out pores and removes dead skin cells. This foamy cleanser is awesome because it is gentle, effective, and can be used anywhere teens breakout (especially the back)! The other product in the “getting clean” step is a spritz toner called ‘All Over Clear. After washing your face, mist this toner over skin to help prevent breakouts and energize skin. Some people complain about the “natural” scent, but it does an amazing job of clearing the skin. All Over Clear is an effective product, but can be left out if you are on a budget.

Step two is “taking on issues.” This begins with ‘Ready, Set, Scrub!’…an exfoliant-and-mask-in-one. This is such a smart product because it gently purifies skin and absorbs oil in a single step (important for busy teens). Just apply in a circular motion for the scrubbing effect, then let it set for 5-7 minutes to absorb oils and refine skin’s texture. It works great, and is an important step for teen skin. Next comes ‘Bedtime for Breakouts’…a nighttime cream to clear and calm skin while you sleep. It contains salicylic acid and plant extracts to keep oil in check. The final step for taking on issues is ‘Hit the Spot’. This spot treatment is applied directly to breakouts, helping to stop bacteria with benzoyl peroxide. It’s great for zapping pimples, but is a product that can be left out for budgets.

The final step is “protecting skin”, and is very important for skin health because it involves SPF. Many teens may not be concerned with sun damage, but the truth is that the sun they absorb now can affect their skin many years later (in the form of wrinkles, sun spots and cancer). There are 2 moisturizer options with an SPF15: Welcome Matte SPF15 and Brighten Up SPF15. Both help control oil and eliminate shine. The primary difference is that Welcome Matte SPF15 provides a matte finish, where Brighten Up SPF15 has a shimmer (which may not be as practical for everyday use). The final touch is ‘Smart Mouth Lip Shine’; a natural, shine-inducing lip treatment with Vitamin E. It does a great job moisturizing dry lips, but some people may not love the “orange creamsicle-like” taste!

Clean Start is easy to love because of the low price point (no single product costs over $24), healthy ingredients and the fact that Dermalogica has been a well-respected brand since 1986. This line contains no parabens and does not test on animals. Aside from being simple and quick to use, it is an ideal alternative to other teen lines on the market because it does not overly dry the skin (which causes more problems in the future). It maintains oiliness and prevents breakouts while keeping skin healthy! You can purchase it at many salons, as well as online.
