Decoration Ideas for Small Bedrooms

If you are faced with the task of trying to make your small bedroom feel more like home, you may find yourself feeling frustrated as you have very little space to work with. When your bed takes up the vast majority of space in your room, its easy for your bedroom to feel cramped, cluttered and anything but relaxing. Here are some ideas to help you eliminate clutter in your small bedroom and make it feel more comfortable with decor.

Light Colors

Even if you have a love for the color black, dark colors will make your small bedroom feel even, well, smaller. Instead, decorate the room with light shades. Light colored walls will make the room seem larger, while coordinating decor will make it look put together and well decorated. To make your small bedroom look even “larger,” choose a gloss or semi-gloss finish for the wall paint. Gloss finish is highly reflective, meaning light will bounce off of it to open up the space and make it look bigger.

Keep Furniture to a Minimum

Sure, you’ve always dreamed of owning a 7 piece matching bedroom set, but in reality, an overload of furniture will only make your small bedroom feel cramped and claustrophobic. Instead, keep the furniture in your bedroom to an absolute minimum. A full sized bed will take up much less space than a queen while still providing enough room for two people to sleep in. Keep your bookshelf in your living room if possible, and use a tall dresser rather than a long one. By downsizing your furniture to fit the space, your bedroom will be a much cozier environment that you will actually enjoy spending time in.

Utilize Shelving

While covering every inch of wall space with shelves is totally not chic, hanging a few shelves to display your belonging will help keep your items organized while incorporating them into your decor. For a more formal looking bedroom, I highly recommend using crown moulding shelves. These shelves look just like crown moulding you would find lining the ceiling of a room and have a very elegant look to them. For a more relaxed, casual look, cube shelves are fun and fresh looking. Both styles can be purchased in a wide variety of sizes and colors, making it easy to mix and match them to decorate your small bedroom.

Large Mirror

A large mirror hung over your dresser or bed will reflect light to make the space seem larger. When combined with reflective paint, your walls won’t seem so close together and the entire room will have the illusion of being bigger. Choose a style and color of mirror frame that match the rest of your decor.

Let the Light In

Bare windows are boring, but blacked out windows that don’t let any natural light in will make the room dark and depressing. Choose sheer or nearly sheer curtains for your bedroom, or install tie back hooks to open the curtains up during the daytime. This way light can get in to reflect off of your paint/mirrors to make your small bedroom look bigger and more welcoming.
