Decorating Canning Jars for Gifts

Backyard Design Ideas, Canning Jars, Scrapbooking Paper

Canning jars present many opportunities for decorating and gift giving. They are perfect packages for everything from dessert mixes to candles. I have been decorating and assembling jars for holiday gifts, and the results have been spectacular. I am not using paint or glass pieces to decorate the canning jars. I am embellishing the glass with scrapbook stickers, paper and twine. Use my ideas and come up with some of your own after browsing the scrapbooking aisle of your local craft store. The options are only limited by your imagination and the occasion for giving gifts.

Necessary Supplies

When decorating canning jars for gifts you will need scrapbooking paper in color and designs of your choice. You will also need fabric that coordinates with the paper cutouts, scrapbooking paper, dimensional stickers, paper twist, scissors, glue dots, double sided foam tape and ribbon or jute twine. Consult my photo for ideas. Tags can be tied to the tops of jars when presenting them as gifts.

Glue dots are ideal for canning jar crafts. They are stamped onto sheets of clear plastic, and protective sheets cover the other side. They make it easy to attach paper cutouts and fabric when decorating canning jars for gifts. They do not have to dry, and they work exceptionally well to hold embellishments in place.

Decorating Procedure

Decorating canning jars for gifts is a lot of fun, especially when planning to fill them with candy, homemade cookies or other small items that fit the occasion. Lay out all of the stickers and paper cutouts before getting started, and have a plan in mind.

Cut out bands of scrapbooking paper that will fit the jars. They should be approximately four inches wide. Cut out pieces of fabric about three inches wide. After wrapping the jars with the paper and attaching them with glue dots, cover the paper with the fabric wrap. The fabric can also be attached with glue dots. I attached burlap over scrapbooking paper, and the glue dots held it firmly in place. Consult the photo for a visual guide.

Next, top the wrapped jars with paper cutouts and scrapbooking stickers of your choice. Attach the first layer of paper cutouts with glue dots. Use double sided foam tape squares to attach the next layer of paper cutouts. The foam squares will add dimension. Scrapbooking stickers will have peel away backing, and no other adhesive is required.

Finish decorating the canning jars with paper twist bows and narrow satin ribbon or natural jute twine. Wrap a band of paper, ribbon or paper twist around the rims of the canning jars. Cut out circles of fabric or printed scrapbooking paper to cover the lids. Attach gift tags using jute twine or ribbon. I used a thin wooden backing with my tag, but cardstock works just as well when decorating and finishing canning jars that will hold small gifts for any occasion.
