Cyber School: Is On-Line Education for You?

For years people have been home schooling their children. For years people have been sending their children to public school. Cyber schooling offers the best of both worlds. It has the structured curriculum of a brick and mortar school and the convenience, freedom, and flexibility of home schooling. It also gives you the control over the education you child gets.

There are many advantages to cyber schooling. You can pretty much set your own schedule. The flexibility is amazing. You can do block scheduling, where you do a weeks worth of lessons on one subject each day. For example if Monday is English day, you would do 5 English lessons, etc. If your child is better at one subject than another, you have the ability to spend 20 minutes on math, but 60 in History. If your child is not a morning person, you can do your schooling in the afternoon and into the evening. The cyber school days are from 12:00 am until 11:59 pm. If you have to take a day off you can schedule it ahead of time. Most will even let you make up those days on Saturdays and Sundays if you choose.

You have so many more choices with a cyber school. There are other benefits too. Cyber schools save them from peer pressure. It saves them from meanness and bullying. At least until they are older and can handle it better. You can save a ton of money in clothing each year. Not because they are going to run around naked, but because the clothing will not get the wear and tear that it does during the school day. Plus the certainly don’t need 5 pairs of $70.00 and $100.00 shoes to wear around the house.

Of course there are the disadvantages too. There are not any extra curricular activities or sports. And it is up to you to make sure your child gets the socialization that is automatic in a brick and mortar school. You will also have to take your child to any state testing that they would normally have in a regular school. They are usually held in one or two places around your county and have scheduled days for these that you will be made aware of months in advance.

Some are concerned about the quality of the education your child will receive from a cyber school. Most schools will give you an inside look at their curriculum before you sign up. You can search online for chat rooms and forums about cyber schooling. Get opinions and see what schools they use. Ask on general message boards. People are usually very helpful and willing to answer some questions and point you in the right direction. You have plenty of options when it comes to choosing a cyber school. Once you choose a school you think will work for you. Call them. Ask questions. Ask about their teachers credentials. Then apply if you feel comfortable with it.

Cyber schooling isn’t for everyone. It takes work and determination from both the student and parent. However once you get into the groove, things usually flow very smoothly. This is an extra option given to you to provide your child a great education, but just remember. Once you sign on, the cyber school will give you the tools you need, but the education is up to you.
