Cupid – Time for a Change: Early Album Review

Autotune, Cupid, Danity Kane

Louisiana based R&B; Cupid is definitely a guilty pleasure. On his debut album Time For A Change, Cupid keeps the mood light with party anthems and dance tracks. Will the lack of depth hurt Cupid in the long run or is Time For A Change the guilty pleasure album of 2007?

The first single off of Time For A Change is the dance track Cupid Shuffle. The song has been taking off all over the country and features an infectious dance to go along with the music. The beat is catchy and on YouTube you can learn how to do the dance. The song has also been remixed by various rappers including DJ Unk, Pitbull, Baby Bash and Fabo of D4L fame.

Do Yo Dance has Cupid joined by Aubrey O’Day of Danity Kane fame. The song is a solid club track but it doesn’t really stand out.

On The Let Out Cupid is joined by Tay-Dizm over a T-Pain produced song. The song sounds exactly like any song T-Pain song. Cupid even uses the same settings on the Antares Autotune. It’s really shocking how similar he sounds to T-Pain on this track. The song could be a surprise hit for Cupid.

On Spin The Bottle featuring Shorty The Kid, Cupid once again takes a page out of T-Pain’s book by relying on Antares Autotune. The song sounds if it was produced by T-Pain and is extremely catchy.

On I Love Me Cupid is joined by Foxx fresh off the success of Wipe Me Down. The song is once again very catchy. The chant like chorus is almost hypnotic. This is one of Cupid’s strongest vocal performances on the album and Foxx’s rap adds a lot to the track.

Someone Like You and Say Yes are both solid mid-tempo songs. These two songs show Cupid’s depth as an artist and are unlike most of the material on the album.

Although Cupid isn’t the most talented singer out, he displays the ability to write catchy and infectious music. The songs are for the most part mostly all club songs which isn’t a bad thing. Time For A Change is a surprisingly good album. Cupid is one of those artists like T-Pain where he might not be the most talented vocalists; yet he put out catchy music that you can dance to. Overall Time For A Change gets 8 out of 10 for a surprisingly solid debut album. If you love to do the Cupid Shuffle be sure to get the album when it’s in stores later this month.
