The name of my favorite music artist is Corey Smith. He is a southerner from head to toe with a love for music and a devotion to living life to the fullest. Corey smith is by far the most down to earth singer and songwriter that I have ever heard. From songs like “If I Could Do It Again” to “The Good Life”, Smith has dominated the blues and rock genres across the US with his genuine style. There are ten songs that speak to me the most from his three albums. These songs are heartfelt with life, love, and loss all in one spectrum. They range from the graduation of a high school senior, to the college life, to love and heartbreak and finally to the rise to adulthood after the fight with adolescence.
Everyone had a high school crush. But some of us never had the courage to tell our crush about our feelings. From a Distance” tells about the love that a boy had for a girl all throughout grade school. I had a high school crush and still do. We never talk anymore. But even when we did talk it was only as friends and I never got too close. She always had a boyfriend, so I can relate to the song.
There could not be a more perfect song for a seventeen year old than “Twenty-One.” This song describes the desire of a young person to have the carefree, fun lifestyle of a young adult. All of us have wanted to be older at one time. But time does pass, and one day everyone wants to go back.
I’m Not Gonna Cry” is THE graduation song. All of the feelings in this song are felt by high school seniors on graduation day. It shows how important that day is to someone on the edge between adolescence and adulthood. Just as it is in the song, my graduation day was a great day in my life but at the same time it is hard to leave with all of the memories with friends and staff.
Most high school graduates go on a trip with their friends after they graduate. If I Could Do It Again” describes my trip to Panama City! A trash bag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beer was what I brought with me. We were never at the hotel, only at the beaches, clubs, and restaurants. I spent all of my money and had to pay someone back but it was the most fun and I would do it all the same “If I could do it again.”
Everyone wants a better life than they have. Who doesn’t want more money, clothes, and friends. But that is not what life’s about. It’s about creating yourself and being real to yourself and everyone around you. It’s about doing what you love and putting your best foot forward to accomplish the goals you have set for your life. “A Better Place” is what we are all looking for.
After high school we all lost people we loved. Our friends moved on and so did we. Some stayed around and some moved far away and we’ll most likely never get to see them again. “The basement” is a song dedicated to all of those who have had to go their separate ways.
“One Day At a Time” is a song for those who have been broken up with. It is for those dealing with a heavy loss of someone they cared about but ended up not caring about them. It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. I heard that somewhere. But it’s true. Some just can’t get over loss and this song is for those.
If there’s a hard time you’re dealing with or a hassle that you have to deal with daily, this song’s for you. “Drinkin Again” is a song for those ready to drown their pain and suffering away into the bottom of a glass. Tired and fed up with your job, your family, friends or just life in general. Everyone has felt that feeling of the need for escape from reality.
Adults act a little younger than they should sometimes. There are some forty-year olds that think they’re still twenty-one. Some people never grow up. “Next Year” is a tribute to being young, and staying young. Life isn’t all about getting the next big promotion. It’s about having fun and knowing who you really are on the inside and expressing that person on the outside.
“The Good Life” is a song of someone that is very thankful for the life that they have. This attitude should be shared by everyone that normally would take their opportunities for granted. I think a good life is what someone makes it to be. I believe that if you’re happy, truly happy, then you are leading a good life.
Corey Smith has a personal relationship with each song that he has written. This is why his songs are so good! They’re real, about him, and his life. They reflect who he is and a lot of where everyone has been at some point in their life. Because of their criteria, his songs can connect with just about anyone on a very deep level. My favorite artist is by far, Corey Smith.
