Construct a Gift Box Wreath for the Holidays

Summer Crafts

Do you hate to throw away those little leftover pieces of holiday gift wrap? I know that I do. That’s why I tend to save them for future craft project use. One craft project that is ideal for getting rid of leftover pieces of wrapping paper is a gift box wreath. The wreath has several variations, most of which are trouble-free and quick to construct. With that said, here’s what you need to know in order to build one:

Supplies Needed

In order to complete this home décor project, you will need a 10 inch Styrofoam wreath, a box of pearl head pins (1.5 inches or longer), a roll of scotch tape, 20 gauge floral wire and pieces of leftover wrapping paper. You’ll also need pine tree trimmings, U-shaped florist’s pins, a roll of 1/16 inch wide ribbon, a roll of 2 inch wide wire edge ribbon and a 1 inch thick piece of rectangular shaped Styrofoam.

Assemble the Gift Box Wreath

Begin the project by cutting the Styrofoam rectangle into miniature gift boxes. Then neatly cover each miniature gift box with the leftover gift wrap pieces and 1/16 inch wide ribbon. Keep going by inserting a pearl head pin into the center of each miniature gift’s bow. Once that’s done, set the gift boxes aside.

Continue by attaching the pine tree trimmings to the Styrofoam wreath form with the aid of the floral wire and U-shaped florist’s pins. Next, using the pearl head pins, attach the miniature gift boxes to the wreath as well. You’ll also want to use the 2 inch wide ribbon to create a festive bow. Afterward, attach the bow to the top of wreath. At this point, your gift box wreath will be ready for use.

Suggested Wreath Variations

Over the years, I have found that gift box wreaths may be altered in many ways. For example, instead of using pine tree trimmings, you could cover the Styrofoam wreath form with gift wrap instead. Other items that may be used to cover the wreath form are dried Artemisia, cinnamon sticks and mixtures of dried potpourri.

If you do decide to go with the potpourri mixture, simply run dried flowers and spices through an electric spice grinder. Then mix them with white craft glue and slather the mixture onto the wreath. The glue should dry clear and leave you with a fragrant wreath form that can be decorated with the gift boxes and dried flowers.

I should also mention that gift box wreaths aren’t just for Christmas either. I have found that you can transform them into baby shower wreaths, birthday wreaths and bridal shower wreaths. All you need to do is swap out the Christmas wrapping paper for wrapping paper that is appropriate for the occasion. For example, you could decorate a baby shower wreath with baby shower paper and miniature baby bottles. The options are truly endless.
