College Review: UNCC, University of North Carolina Charlotte

Adult Students, College Review

I am a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, so is it only fitting that I give a review of the school I attended for 3 years.

The admissions process is somewhat competitive. You do not necessarily have to take all advance classes in high school to get in but you do have to be active in high school. In high school you need to participate in extracurricular activities and possess at least a 2.5 GPA. Transfer students need to do the same and you have more of an edge because you have demonstrated that you can perform college coursework. Adult students, good chance of admissions because you have life experience.

The advising process is at time confusion. Everyone has to go through academic advising before registering for class. According to a lot of students on campus the advising center, counselors are not very good at their job. The counselors time and time again have wrongly advised students. This process may leave the student staying in school for another semester or two (more money individuals have to pay). Sometimes this can throw you off because there are prerequisites for certain courses. I was probably wrongly advised every semester but one.

The academic process is a little better than advising. Depending on your major you can either have the best time here or the worst. As far as professors, most of my professors were the most intelligent and compassionate people that I have every meet. You will have professors that are out to get you, meaning their goal is to make your hard and some succeed. I will not get many of these professors.

The textbooks, it is a Barnes and Noble bookstore like every school bookstore all textbooks are overpriced. You are better off buying books on line. On perk, if you work for the bookstore you get 30% off on your textbooks. Clothes are also overpriced, so it is best to wait until the seasons change and clothes go on sale. Keep away from the bookstore if you can help it.

The organizations, there are many organizations on campus. There are religious, social, community, and Greek organizations. There are so many that you will be lost on which one(s) to participate in. To make your life easier there is a organization fair at the beginning of the school year, so you can talk to a representative of each active group on campus.

The staff, they really do not like students but yet they work on a college campus (weird). The are not the friendliest people and if they do anything wrong, you will not receive an apology. This is all over campus.

The atmosphere, it is set up to cater to traditional age student body (ages 18-22). Adult students are typically left out even though there is an Adult Services Office on campus. Most events are for the younger students. They do not gear events towards families.

The social aspects, there are lots and lots of parties mostly frat parties. Greek life is big here. Plenty of diversity, so you will meet many people like you.

Sports are big on campus especially basketball and baseball. Female sports are typically left out.

My review is based on being a non-traditional student and is a little bias. Academically it was great but socially it was pretty horrible.
