It was the 1960s when collecting trolls first became popular. But, today there are still collectors seeking the funny looking rubber critters.
The first to make trolls were Dam Things in Denmark. Thomas Dam first carved wooden trolls for events and people liked them. Because of the great desire for more trolls, the family began making troll rubber figures filled with wood shavings. Some wore handmade clothes. Some had real sheepskin hair. All were fun to look at and collect.
In 1964 Trolls began being marketed in Great Britain. The figures were given marks on their foot. Sometimes, these marks were dated.
Soon after, the figures became popular in the United States. Then, various makers began producing the collectible trolls.
People across the world collect them. On eBay they are still be sold for anywhere from $1 apiece to $20,000 apiece. It all depends on the rarity of the piece.
The troll, a Norse mythology figure, can be found looking life animals or people.
A rare Nyform Troll #1 recently was valued around $3,000.
A large collection of rare early trolls can easily sell for $3,000-$4,000 to the right buyer.
A seller recently asked around $1,500 for a troll featuring a Halloween theme. A rare Monkey 7″ Dam Troll was going for close to $700. A baseball player new in box from Dam is valued around $500.
Items are always best new in box. Condition is important. Hair must be intact. Color is not unusually important. Clothes must not be ripped. Any accessories that came with the item need to be with it. Values drop dramatically with damage. The older ones are often worth more.
You may not be able to get what a troll is valued at in this economy. You may have to wait a year or two, but if you love the critters that should not be a problem.
A few other trolls from Dam to watch ate ones that look like animals such as giraffes or lions. These are valued around $100 in perfect condition.
Other rare trolls to keep an eye out for are ones made for countries or states like Alaska. Some wear cool Eskimo outfits and such.
There are also some rare trolls with two heads.
If you are looking to start a collection or add to yours, the best bet is to buy a lot of trolls on eBay. Often you can get a starter set for less than $25. Of course, tag sales are a good searching place as well as thrift stores. You can even put a notice on Craig’s list if you are seeking a good quantity of the dolls.
As with all collectible items, collect the ones you like. That is most important. It is the fun of collecting that is the most valuable. In time, high priced ones may be more desired by individuals. If that is the case, you will come across some of those as well.
