Chemical-Free Hair Relaxers for Black Women

Relaxers

Many African-American women are growing sick of the cost, burning, and hair damage that accompanies the hair relaxing process. The growing popularity of alternative hairstyles (wigs, lace fronts, braids, etc.) has caused many women to investigate other methods of keeping their own natural hair smooth, soft, and manageable.

Instead of harsh chemicals, these products utilize natural ingredients like clay compounds that soften and smooth the natural hair pattern. Many people expect these products to work much like traditional relaxers. But depending upon the product (and hair type) the results can vary greatly. If you’re getting tired of traditional relaxers, and want a gentler way to manage your natural tresses, check out some of these products. Perhaps one of them is right for you…

Curlaway

Curlaway is a semi-permanent all-natural hair relaxer that straightens hair more and more with continued use. The product (which costs around $20) can be applied to hair that is either wet or dry, and is used in two basic ways: overnight, for more intense curl relaxation, and as a light refresher (applied and left on for about 3 hours) for already chemically relaxed hair. The product was introduced in 2008, and has been receiving pretty favorable reviews. Most complaints revolve around the pungent smell; most users claim the product has the aroma of “vinegar and rotting apples.” But in general, most customers have been very pleased with the results.

DanDe Cosmetics Cleopatra, Natural hair straightener

This rather obscure product claims to do many wonderful things for ethnic hair. Straightening while repairing damaged, chemical-treated hair happens to be one of those things. According to a brief description, the product can be applied to the roots or the actual hair shaft (unlike traditional relaxers.) Cleopatra Natural hair straightener also claims to have permanent results and is specifically designed for African-American hair textures. The manufacturer is located in Israel, however. So actually getting your hands on this product may take some finagling.

Baka Beauty Natural-Laxer

Baka Beauty Natural-Laxer is derived from an evergreen, and is 100% natural. As opposed to other products of this nature, Natural-Laxer focuses on strengthening while very gently relaxing. Product makers claim that the relaxer is great for transitioning from a permed (relaxed) style to natural hair.

Those considering this product should note that Baka Beauty Natural-Laxer will not completely straighten the hair. Additionally, this product isn’t recommended for those who have either white, gray, or exceptionally light colored hair, as there could be some discoloration. Reviews of the product are sparse and mixed. Some claim that the relaxer fails to live up to its promise, and that its thick consistency can make it difficult to wash out.

PhytoSpecific Beauty Relaxer

“Essential oils and plant extracts” appear to be the key to PhytoSpecific’s natural relaxing

system. Appropriate for all hair types, this kit includes a balm, straightening cream, a cleansing emulsion, a restructuring product, and application supplies. Unlike other natural relaxing creams, Phyto is not compatible with traditional lye (and no-lye relaxers.) In fact, it is recommended that users apply the treatment to extensive new growth only. Users of PhytoSpecific claim that the product is very effective, but a little on the pricey side. Additionally, it should be noted that this hair care system cannot be used with very many other hair styling products.

Janelle Beauty Diva Smooth Chemical-Free Relaxer

If you are looking for a healthier way to keep hair bouncy and straight, Diva Smooth might be the alternative relaxer for you. Makers of this chemical-free relaxer hinge the product’s success on the use of a flat iron. While most people would agree that adding any amount of heat to the hair is damaging, Diva Smooth claims to prevent breakage. According to the website, the effect lasts approximately four weeks before an additional application is necessary (for new growth.) However, this product can be used in conjunction with chemical relaxers and even hair coloring. For about $30 per kit, the promises being made seem fairly impressive. So if you tend to create most of your hairstyles with a flat iron, you will probably enjoy the overall effect of using Diva Smooth.
