Catherine Zeta Jones Opens Up About Bipolar II Disorder

Getting down to business on her new film “Playing the Field,” Catherine Zeta-Jones was spotted hard at work in Shreveport, Louisiana today (April 20).

The “Entrapment” actress looked to be in good spirits as she filmed scenes, especially given her recent skirmish with Bipolar II Disorder.

“Playing the Field” is about a former professional athlete with a weak past who tries to redeem himself by coaching his son’s soccer team, only to find himself unable to resist when in scoring position with his players’ restless and gorgeous moms.

And it sounds like Catherine has quite the cast surrounding her – Gerard Butler , Dennis Quaid, Jessica Biel, and Uma Thurman all star as well.

On a sidenote, the sighting comes amidst reports telling that Zeta-Jones is in final negotiations to join the cast of Adam Shankman’s musical “Rock of Ages. According to omg!, the flick already has a star-studded cast with a lineup that includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti and Mary J. Blige.

Of the news, director Shankman said, “It’s like the musical gods just blessed us!”

Recently undergoing a stint at a medical facility to help her cope with Bipolar II Disorder, Catherine Zeta-Jones is determined to help others who struggle with the illness.

The “Mask of Zorro” star told press, “This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them.”

She continued, “If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.”

Of Catherine’s decision to get help, a gal pal explained, “The simple things would just seem overwhelming, like going out to dinner. There was just a little piece of her chipped away. It was hard to watch because I knew how hard she was trying.”

After serving as an unending source of support for her husband, it was recently revealed that Catherine Zeta-Jones has her own battle to fight with Bipolar Disorder.

Last week a rep for the “No Reservations” actress confirmed that she had checked into a facility for a few days to treat her ailment.

The spokesperson also acknowledged that the timing of Catherine’s treatment has much to do with “the stress of the past year.”

A pal of the 41-year-old actress told press, “Catherine has had to deal with Michael’s illness, and that’s been hard. She went in for a few days because she’s about to start working, and to make sure she’s in top form, which she is.”

As for her husband, it appears he’s doing his part to give back to the place that detected the disease others had missed.

It has just been announced that Michael Douglas plans to host a fundraiser for Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital, the site of his throat cancer diagnosis.

One of the items up for auction at the event will be a round of golf with Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, at a spot close to the couple’s vacation home in the Mont-Tremblant region.

The $375-a-plate fundraising gala is scheduled for May 3rd at Le Windsor in downtown Montreal.
