Car AC System Maintenance: How to Perform a Service Check

Some places of the country are starting to heat up and it isn’t even summer yet. Even though many of us will reduce our travel time this summer because of higher gas rates, we will still be using our automobile’s air conditioner to stay cool. Like any piece of machinery, it needs to be checked out and sometimes repaired for deficiencies.

Keep in mind that when you use your air conditioner in your car, the mileage also goes down on gasoline use. Whenever you can, try to avoid using your air conditioner to save on gasoline. Simple things like keeping your windows open and parking in the shade can reduce energy use more than you will realize. If you have a garage, use it.

Before you begin any type of summer driving, have your air conditioner checked out by a service department person or mechanic. The minimal cost could save you hundreds later on. They will check your compressor, hoses, valves, condenser, evaporator, and coolant. Sometimes new coolant is needed. Always try to avoid mixing coolants. Try to use the same type that is in the vehicle now. It won’t hurt your vehicle to mix them but, it may keep your vehicle from running top notch.

Look for these warning signs of trouble that make for unpleasant expenses.
1. Loud noises when the air conditioner is turned on.
2. The air conditioner doesn’t cool like it should.
3. Water on your vehicles floor mats.
4. The blower makes noises or doesn’t blow at all.
5. Unusual odors coming from the vehicle when it is running.
6. The defroster doesn’t work.
7. You notice moisture on your front or side windows.
8. Your vehicle starts to run hot.
9. You notice extra moisture under the front of your vehicle when it is parked. Keep in mind that all air conditioners will sweat water and might leave just a small puddle under your vehicle.

If you see any of these tell tale signs it is time to get to your automobile technician quickly.

Whenever you are in heavy traffic and it doesn’t appear you are going to be moving very soon, you can do things like cracking your hood, turning off your air conditioner and rolling down the windows. Yes I know this is uncomfortable. However, when you consider the other problems that might come up, it is a wise choice to be a little warm than having your car over heat. Some people will pull over to the side until the traffic picks up. They might start reading a book or doing some work in their car while the traffic reduces. Be careful though. because there are some laws that don’t permit this.

If you have a sun roof in your car, pop it open. Hot air rises and will escape through your sun roof.

Nobody likes to be uncomfortably hot. This is especially true when the temperature climbs over the three digit mark. However, your vehicle will heat up rather quickly and could keep you from reaching your destination. Carry some cool liquid with you in your car like a sports drink or bottle of water. That will also help to keep you cool.

Lastly, remember that your vehicle is only as good as you keep the maintenance up on it. Take the time and the money and prepare for the hot driving season before it arrives. You will be glad you did.
